1992 Toyota 4x4 SR5 2.4L 22RE from North America

Summary:

Absolutely outstanding, durability and reliability are off the charts, cannot speak too highly

Faults:

Thermostat stuck on a subzero day, and it hung a valve, timing set was shot anyway, so a head job at 287,000 miles, first time I ever cracked a gasket on this engine!

Accessories have started to go... new starter, alternator.

General Comments:

Finest piece of equipment I have ever owned.

I have NOT been gentle with this truck. The body work is starting to crack from sheer metal fatigue and overuse/abuse. I will drive this thing till the doors fall off.

Simply amazing. When it finally breaks clean in half, I will find a pampered one and build another one just like it.

1992 Toyota 4x4 Extended cab 3.0L gasoline from North America

Summary:

I would buy this truck again tomorrow

Faults:

Warranty recall of the steering center link - no cost replacement. Front hubs needed to be re-packed, very inexpensive. Front calipers were getting tight so I replaced them (pads too) parts were very reasonable. 4 shocks, and new tires.

The drivers seat is torn (bottom left of seat back - seems very common).

The clear coat was peeling on the front drivers fender when I bought it.

General Comments:

I love the truck. It is smooth and comfortable on the highway. Quiet too. It could use more power for towing (small trailer with 2 dirt bikes). I am always wanting better gas mileage, but then it is a truck, not a car.

It was well cared for when I bought it so it has no rust.

The head gasket recall had been done on the truck - the biggest thing to watch for on this model.

1992 Toyota 4x4 DX 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Cheap to keep and will get me there and back

Faults:

Absolutely nothing. I bought from the original owner and it was maintained well. Just your normal basic maintenance. The rear bumper seems to be the only part rusting through.

General Comments:

I bought this truck with intentions to give my '86 faithful 4Runner with 292,000 miles a break. I'm likely to see the same dependability for years to come on the truck. However, the ride is torture over road imperfections. I get between 22-27 miles to the gallon and the air-conditioning on Toyotas are frigid.

1992 Toyota 4x4 XTRA Cab 22RE from North America

Summary:

Head turning reliability

Faults:

Replaced timing chain, tensioner, brackets, and gears as a maintenance item.

Clear coat on front fenders starting to come off.

General Comments:

I drove the truck for about a year and a half before I started building it. I didn't have anything go wrong with it, even with pretty hard off-road abuse.

I didn't have the truck a month before it was taken up a 4X4 trail with a bunch of built Toyota's and Jeep's. It didn't get stuck until the very last bump in the trail where it high centered (no big deal).

I've since put in 4.88 gears with a Detroit Truetrac limited slip in the front. Rancho torsion bars with add-a-leaves. Pro-Comp stage II 4" suspension lift. 33x10.50 Buckshot tires. The engine was replaced at 148,000 miles with a built engine (there was nothing wrong with the original).

The truck sees regular highway driving (100 miles per day), gets 17 mpg, and will top out at close to 100 mph, which is pretty good with all of the mods.

This truck really performs off-road and had very good street manners.

1992 Toyota 4x4 Pickup 3.0L from North America

Summary:

Major bargain

Faults:

The truck runs very good and has been for a while. But I have just recently fixed an oil leak in the rear gaskets. That is common in 90's pickup models. But in 180000 miles that was the only major problem. I only had to change the front disk brakes once, and I changed the tires two times cause of abuse on off-road.

General Comments:

This is an extraordinary truck. Very strong and powerful. I have never gotten stuck with the very powerful four wheel drive. The insides are in top shape, although the seat has a little wear to it.
