1985 Toyota Carina 2 1.6 petrol from Finland

Summary:

Simple and durable!

Faults:

Left rear brake pipe broke during MOT, replaced it myself, cost less than 20 euros. The car rusts faster than European cars.

Other than that, nothing ever went wrong, however, I changed oil, oil filter, spark plugs, cables, distributor head and rotor, air filter, petrol filter, timing belt and auxiliary belt by myself as a part of normal service.

General Comments:

Drives superb! starts first time every time, even in winters -25 C. A lot of space in the boot, easy to fix and service at home.

It's almost 25 years old, but still runs like a new car, never broke down on roadside, I've driven it over 1600 kms in a day on motorway.

Spare parts are cheaper and easier to find. The car has got just what we need to roll on, no stupid functions, no complicated electronics.

Hi, I just had a,look at what you put and I think it has helped me make my mind up, as I am on my way in the morning to look at a Toyota Carina 11 1.6 GL hatch with 57,000 miles, and all service history plus all MOTs, plus MOT till June 2010.

So thanks for the info, all the best, Bren.

1985 Toyota Carina GL 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

As reliable as they come

Faults:

Nothing really has gone wrong with it, i have just had to replace the usual things, like the clutch, exhaust, and tires. The only major thing I have had to replace in the engine is the water pump at 10000 miles. I have the car serviced every 5000 miles.

General Comments:

What can I say?,for a 17 year old car, daily driven and kept outdoors it just doesn't give up. the guy who services it for me says I should get at least 170000 miles out of it before any serious engine work is required.

1985 Toyota Carina DX 1.6 petrol from Norway

Summary:

Much car at low cost

Faults:

The exhaust-system simply fell off due to rust.

One towing due to minor ignition fault.

Otherwise nothing.

General Comments:

Amongst, the ugliest designs ever, but dead cheap, with fuel consumption as low as 5 litres every 100 kilometres.

The car is roomy and comfy, even for long rides. The handling is soft, and the car tends to understeer when fully loaded. Light on the wheel, no need for power-steering.

I can rely on this car every morning.

It starts on first stroke in -20 degrees Celcius, and the engine runs as smooth as any new one.

Tends to rust though. Clearly not a construction designed for Scandinavian climate.
