1984 Toyota Long bed pick-up review from North America
"For free and intended to be highly modified, not too bad."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Previous owner had the timing chain break in 1998, which bent 2 valves. Timing chain was replaced, valves were not repaired, and was driven on 3 cylinders with the idle turned up for 4 years.
2 valves replaced, minor porting job, and valve seats ground.
The body was completely rotten, and the frame is completely rusted through just ahead of the rear spring front hangers.
General comments?
The price was right (free), and the plan is to repair the frame and drop the body of a 1994 Suzuki 4-door Sidekick onto it; the extreme body rust didn't matter to me. The frame rust was unexpected, but talking to other Toyota owners, I have found that it is very common, even in places that generally don't have rusty vehicles. I would never buy a Toyota pickup unless I got it on a hoist to check for rust first.
With the price of gas, it will probably be converted to run on propane, which is 1/2 the price of gas, pollutes less, and is way easier on the engine.
