Hey now, I thought it was supposed to be the poor man's Ferrari...

...So why do we all need to win the LOTTERY in order to buy one???!!!

I pay £1005 fully comp to insure my 1996 300bhp rev3 MR2 (All mods declared, chip, decat exhaust, FCD, boost controller etc, 25 years old with full NCB) I have yet to meet anything on the road that can touch it! Bang per buck, the best roadgoing fun money can buy :-) (Albeit scary in the wet, no Traction Control in my car and the rear end itches to swap sides with the front, decent tyres and a light right foot in the wet are a must!)

To who originally wrote the review: anyone who thinks an Escort Cosworth is just a few spoilers and nothing else (just look at the sort of money they still go for) clearly knows nothing about it! (just ask Jeremy Clarkson who owned one)

Mr2 Turbos are great, but my dream car would be an Escort Cosworth - if they were going for the same bargain prices as an Mr2 Turbo, I would definitely have the Cosworth instead.

Ignore this guy completely - he doesn't own the car he's linked to and never will, he's a dreamer.

First point - this car was built in Japan by Phoenix Power, it's still in Japan. It wasn't built by the person who posted the original message and will never be owned by him.

The car has never been "chromed" - the engine bay is functional with only the cam cover being "detailed" to match the exterior colour.

£37,000 wouldn't build you this car, it might buy you the parts, but the labour and development costs involved would easily consume that budget - there is no tuner in the UK who has ever undertaken a project of this size on the MR2.

Your comment that "pads, discs and oil needing to be replaced" were the only things that have "gone wrong" with the car are very misguided, even if you were lucky enough to buy this car and import it into the UK you'd have serious issues with our fuel and finding someone here to remap the engine to suit the lower RON we have.

It's quite sad that someone feels they can "adopt" a car as special as this and then make up an ownership story backed up with a link that goes to the scan of an article that explains that the car was built in Japan and is still there.

Re the "MR2000" quote - I was there, that car wasn't.

Re the "7 different Mags" comment, if this is your car and it's been so widely featured why did you feel the need to link to the pictures *I* scanned? (links now dead because the content has moved)

Re the "and has even been on the Men and Motors channel" comment - when was this and on what program? I don't recall M&M ever going to Japan to do a feature.

In summary the original poster is a liar and a dreamer, yes the car is real, the power figures quoted are real, sadly the "owner" is far from real, he probably drives a Nova and dreams of MR2 ownership.

Take a deep breath and post a message apologising for your lies sir.

I was at MR2000, I don't recall seeing any MR2s leaving "2 dirty black streaks for the full 1/4 mile".

To the people who actually didn't beleive the 743 horsepower MR2.

Maybe you dumb people might check out a place called PHEONIX POWER HOUSE that specialises in MR2's, they're releasing them at 743 hp Minimum, running sub 8 second quarter miles!

So to those people who said this guy's full of it, EAT THAT!

MR2's are the SPEED DEMONS FROM HELL!

743hp is the MINIMUM this workshop builds MR2's at, using the original block.

As for all those people who don't know what you're talking about saying it's impossible, in your face!

That's all I have to say. This is rock hard proof that MR2's are the worlds FASTEST cars.

I'm trying to figure out what year is better when trying to buy an Mr2? I currently have a 91 Eagle Talon AWD which I am trading for + cash for a 91 Mr2 with the JDM engine already installed. Is this a good model year? Reason I am asking is because, the 90-91 talons have better engines then all the other years, is this so with the Mr2 as well?

I took the liberty to read all of the comments and I like what I read, but my question is this...

I'm from the US, we have different requirements when it comes to emissions, can I buy my dream car "right hand drive, 5-speed, T-tops, with a turbo and still pass inspections?

Where can I look to find this car to buy one?

All the links that where provided I couldn't get into, is there another way I can see these links? Maybe a better web-site?

All I want is a 10-sec. car "Mr2" what do I need to get first to last to get there?

Is it true that the Mr2 can bottom out at 1200hp? I heard that threw the grape vine.

If anyone wants any of these questions please contact me.

There is a video of an mr2 mk2 with 1200 ish hp on you tube. Wouldn't know if its true, and if it is I guess it is a v6 conversion running turbo. The mr2 rev 3 I think had slightly more power than the pre 1995 revisions. Yet to achieve a sub 10 are your still looking at a lot of work, so a lot of $$$ as well. Bigger turbo, ecu, fueling system, boost valve, boost controller running high teens psi. de-cat pipes in Britain are legal pre 92 I think. So they run a different emissions test at MOT (testing). Don't know if this helps in th US when trying to get the old emissions lower. But you will need to work on the exhaust flow any way with extra power and boost. All that extra intake has to have somewhere to get out and as fast as it can. then theres the extra pressure on engine internals when running high boost turbos. Without any huge effort 350 - 400hp would be a nice figure to aim for and wouldn't take the earth. But I'm not sure you'll be seeing 10's. good luck.
