1996 Toyota Starlet EP91 - Life 1.3 4EFE from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Buy one that's been looked after, and it will look after you!

Faults:

Seat belt warning light sometimes stays on.

Rear wheel bearings needed replacing around 230,000 kms.

Changed my clutch around 240,000 kms (wasn't necessary, but I felt I should do it anyway).

Front C.V. joints are starting to make a noise now on full steering lock (at around 248,000 kms).

** Other Normal Consumables:

Air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, wiper blades etc.

General Comments:

This car has been super reliable since the first day I bought it.

Other than some minor issues, it's never skipped a beat. The motor and transmission feel like they could easily do 300,000 kms without a sweat (with more room for more!).

One of Toyota's best small hatchbacks. I wish they still made the Starlets and scrapped all the Yarises.

Cheap on fuel. Handles predictably. The car has super cold A/C.

For the money, I don't think you can buy a better car!

Wouldn't part with it for all the money in the world :)

Quick curiosity question... how much did replacing the clutch cost you? I'm facing it now. :(

Thanks, AliB.

1996 Toyota Starlet Life 1.3 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Toyota keeps going and going and going on

Faults:

Normal wear and tear, battery replacement.

Driver's seat foam has give way, but I am a big guy, so may not be a problem with smaller people.

Speedo cable seems to come loose and record a higher speed than you're actually traveling. This settles down after a few stops and starts at traffic lights; it is an intermittent problem.

General Comments:

Famous Toyota reliability; out lived the nearest competitor, the Hyundai Excel. This thing would keep on going with regular maintenance. But alas, I feel it is time for a new car.

1996 Toyota Starlet 1.3 from Greece

Summary:

Good well built car with few probs and good reselling value

Faults:

Ignition Failed at around 100,000kmh.

Fuel Pump failed (I frequently drove the car with nearly no petrol - hence my fault) at 120,000km.

Electric windows button failed (cheap replacement)

Driver seat started to wear near the stitching after 6-7yrs.

Nothing else, ever.

General Comments:

Good motor, faster than most small city cars of its generation. Could do 170km/h until recently.

Heavy steering wheel (non-hydraulic)

Good Gearbox, never-ever missed a change.

Mediocre Brakes.

Fast turns not its strong point. Under-steered considerably.

1996 Toyota Starlet 1.3 from Lithuania

Summary:

Perfect and reliable city car

Faults:

After one year exploitation, I have changed the buffer. Everything cost me about 150 Euros.

Everything else is practically perfect.

General Comments:

I bought this car to ride in the city, and I didn't make a mistake. This is the best city car. Of course it goes very fast on motorways. I have reached 160 km/h (5th gear, 4200 rpm) and it was not the limit.

My model has an air conditioning!

Of course in future, I am going to live in the country, so I will have to sell this car. I can drive off roads quite easy with STARLET, but I could easily break it because it is not high.

This car with 7 litres fuel can drive 100km.

Exploitation cost me (without fuel) 500 Euros during two years.

I recommend this car if you are looking for a city car.

1996 Toyota Starlet 1.3 from Greece

Faults:

Cooling system broken.

Rust everywhere.

Getting started problems in cold wheather.

The interior quality was really poor almost every switch broke.

Water in the headlights after rain.

Interior plastics broken.

Gearbox failed.

General Comments:

Very practical for it's size with plenty of room.

Off-road fun because of it's height.

1996 Toyota Starlet Basic one, 3 door 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A nippy, reliable run around

Faults:

Hardly anything except wipers needing replaced and a new tyre.

General Comments:

Love it, wish they still made it.

I don't know what I'd replace it with.

A very very reliable car, nippy and easy to park. Powered steering is good too.
