Boys and girls, here it is. For the buck, the Supra is the car of choice. Honestly, you can't compare it to any other factory car in horsepower. Forget upgrades, the Supra TT came stock with 315 horse. The most you are going to get out of a stock, widely produced v8 is 425. And that's from a hemi. Give Toyota 2 more cylinders and hemispherical heads to work with and look out!
Anyways... If you are going to compare supped up versions of vehicles, sure the Supra is cheaper, but that's because there are more of them and more parts available for them.
I've always said there is no replacement for displacement. The bigger the engine the faster you can make it go, regardless of turbos, lag and anything else previously posted.
What I'm trying to say here is that you are both right. The Supra can put out the same numbers as the V8's for less money, however the V8 is the better engine, with more power, higher top speed, etc. I think you need to quit arguing.
Oh, by the way, whoever said that Supra was built way better than any Corvette ever was, is wrong. They don't even belong in the same comparison chart. Think about stuff before you say it.
Supra's were never really designed to be dragsters, but I like them for the niche they fill. To me they are a nice grand touring car and I myself would love to own any year of Supra. They match Toyota's quality with luxury, handling, and in the later models power.
A Supra isn't the ideal platform to be a dragster, but it has a certain appeal that I guess only some of us can enjoy. The person who made this review only said that he felt his car is fast, which is a fair statement for the year and class of his car. Everyone has their own perspective of "fast". I think anyone should be able to respect a quality piece of machinery for what it is.
Oh no! An intelligent comment! Someone will surely delete it! The Jan. 14 (23:33) comment is probably the first one after the original review that wasn't stupid enough to be laughable, and simultaneously stupid enough to make me wonder about the educational background of the writer. There's that one guy who keeps saying stuff about 80 bazillion horsepower V8 engines. I cannot be sure if his poor grammar is a result of English being a second language for him, or a result of simple stupidity. Then somebody else says that he and a friend got almost 2000 hp out of a Supra I6. Yeah, we believe you. How about this. During the 60's (way back in history, you know), the USO had shows for our soldiers overseas. They had performances and such to bring the soldiers a taste of home. They acquired a car for a show, a "big, weak American boat" called the Lawman. It had a blower (supercharger) that helped it produce 1200-1400 horsepower. It was built by a team of experienced racing professionals, and they got only 1400hp. So now, we should believe that you got 2000hp in your garage, with a few simple modifications?
At least we can all agree on one thing: the guy who keeps posting the World Street Nationals thing is clearly either insane, not old enough to shave, or both. I am an avid racing fan, and have never heard of this competition.
Just remember, the lack of knowledge, and profusion of lying, are not limited to discussions of fast cars like the Supra. I just read a review of a '91 Chevy Beretta, the coupe version of a Lumina, a car I have. It's not slow at all, but it's not fast either, at least not in the "sportscar" sense. But the reviewer is convinced that he has raced, and beaten, a Camaro with it, and only just lost to an Audi S4. My Lumina is a family car. It might beat a Camry, not a Camaro. But the reviewer most likely believes with all his heart that his car can go head to head with Camaros and S4's (an S4 is about as fast as a new 333hp BMW M3. Check Consumer Reports.). So, at least the vehicles in question here, real and imaginary, are worth discussing in terms of speed. And as someone said above, the reviewer didn't say a thing about beating a muscle car. It was that first idiot commenter.
Just for reference, I'm primarily a muscle car fan, but would gladly take a Supra, even non-turbo.
I find it unlikely that even 50% of the above commenters even have their own car, much less a driver's license. In a few years, perhaps they will put down the controller for Gran Turismo 2, start liking girls, enter 8th grade, and regret their comments.
To the guy who disputes my statement that the Supra is built better than the Corvette. Are you kidding me? You think the Corvette is a better built car?
I'm talking about body structure, creaks and rattles, and rigidity. The Supra hands down destroys the creaky and clunky C4. It is still superior to the improved, but still not excellent C5. Perhaps the C6 has maybe reached an equality, but hey now we're comparing a 1998 car to a 2006 car.
I've been in numerous Corvette's and structural rigidity and solidness is not something they are great for. A guy who sold me his 1991 Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo went out and bought a C5 Vette in 1998, and he told me he wishes he never sold the Z because the Vette was more rattly and felt more cheap than the elder Z ever was!
Over here in the USA only teens race on the Street. Adults take their cars on the race track. Now those teens can't compete with people who has money. When Supra first came out- adults checked it out and tried it on the track- slalom and straight. The result is very disappointing. Money was spent and the modified supra TT is no match with the big boys. So that's why the supra was rejected for pro racing. It's only good for the " fast and furious crowd" like you. Go don't race on the street because you might run over your mother or sister, or sister's friends...etc...Supra's are for immature teens. V8's, v10's and v12's always take the checker flag. There's a big difference between a winner and a looser in a competition. No offense loosers.
Corvettes are faster than Supra TT in any kind of race- slalom or drag.
Most Corvettes are slower and mainly do not handle as well on the track. I know first hand. My sons slightly mod 2000 Viper Rt/10 is #2 on a dyno board behind the Supra. Granted with more time and money he will surpass it. You may not like the Supra, but they deserve recognition.
