1991 Vauxhall Astra SX 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

To put a big sound system in and show off

Faults:

A bit of rust on the drivers door, sunroof jammed half way on and a few bulbs out on the dash. And that's about it. It only took a few hours to sort the lot out.

General Comments:

Good strong car if looked after, and it's cos it's my baby.

1991 Vauxhall Astra GTE 2.0i petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

VVVVVVvvvrrrrrrmmmmmmm!

Faults:

The only thing is the high pressure radiator hose blew off!

General Comments:

After I sold my first GTE in '97, I immediately regretted it and had to come back for more. The car offers cheap power - with rally style handling... something that the modern eurobox doesn't offer.

It's a great car, guaranteed to put a smile on your face!

1991 Vauxhall Astra GLS 1.4i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good second-hand car

Faults:

Engine speed sensor failed at 60k miles, which prevented the fuel injection from functioning properly. GBP240 to fix. That's it apart from normal servicing.

General Comments:

Awful chassis and boring image, but has been a cheap and reliable car. Engine strong for a 1.4 and pretty good comfort and space for a small family car.

1991 Vauxhall Astra Si 1.4i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Smart looking, practical insurance friendly warm hatch

Faults:

Ate a dizzy cap and rota arm, literally.

Needed tuning and tracking.

Apart from that, nothing.

General Comments:

It's an old car now, and it's done it's fair share of miles, but I am more than happy with it in most respects. I find it comfortable, it looks good and reliable. The only thing is I wish it went a bit better, but I guess that's what you get for having a 1400 engine in a car like that!

1991 Vauxhall Astra GTE 2.0 8v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap, fast and reliable

Faults:

Nothing major, the car is 9 years old and considering it's probably been driven by plenty of young billy boy racers, I can't complain.

The air-flow meter has been a constant niggling problem, but is a common problem with high performance Astras.

Other than that, only normal wear and tear has needed attention.

General Comments:

Be warned! A great boy racer car, which is fine if you're the first one to own it! Watch out for ragged engines and slightly damaged body work, as it rusts quite quickly, especially the rear wheel arches!

Owned an SRi before and performance is similar, but torque is smoother and more refined. 124bhp and 0-60 in 8.4 secs. Not slow!

I have known 8 valves to reach 145mph before the driver gets scared!

1991 Vauxhall Astra GTE 16V 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Only just brought the car, a couple of bulbs - led dash needs a new dimmer switch but only a five minute job.

General Comments:

Owned an 8v Astra before this which was chipped etc. The 16v isn't chipped yet but is so much quicker which did surprise me. The car has ABS, elec windows, mirrors, and is very smooth to drive, PAS helps as well. Very fast and a joy to drive, you must get one soon to enjoy the experience.

1991 Vauxhall Astra SRi 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

When I brought this car it had a lot of silly little faults that previous owners had not put right, but the basic car was sound.

Wiper motor, power steering pipe leaking, windows sticking, things like that.

General Comments:

It has 50 series tyres on, 15in, so it is very hard on ride, but for an eight valve it goes like *&$", it looks nice and being 5 door is very practical. It is a better buy than an Escort, and is a lot cheaper than a GTI.

All in all a lot of car for your money.

P.S. It also has ABS!

1991 Vauxhall Astra GTE 2.0i 16V petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Starter motor failed, fuel tank split.

General Comments:

It has been known for the fuel tank to split due to the breather pipe becoming blocked.

Eratic idle speed due to the air control valve sticking.

Removing the cat on earlier cars improves the performance.

Always starts first time.

Brilliant performance which not a lot of other cars can match.

1991 Vauxhall Astra GTE Convertible 2.0i 8v 115BHP petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

Excellent performance from 115BHP engine. Very flash with electric hood.

Service parts are expensive though eg. distributor cap.

1991 Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.4 carb petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Front pads and discs replaced.

Rear silencer replaced.

General Comments:

I will be sad to lose this car although the way it is going that could be a long time yet.

I am beginning to think Astra's are the fastest cars on the road, I regularly see 1.3 Merits waste Mondeo's.
