1993 Vauxhall Corsa LS 1.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent economic car

Faults:

Track rod end replaced 1 year after I got it. Replaced and fitted for £27.

Front driver side road spring cracked prior to purchase. Replaced for £12.

General Comments:

Compared to my previous car, Vauxhall Nova, this car was a bit slower. But after driving this thing for a while it shows it's speed when driven correctly.

Handling is a bit light with bog standard tires. Steering, however, is extremely light for a car with no power steering.

Hate the fact that the wheel arch trims fade to almost white, but a touch of back to black sorts that out.

Interior is very basic, but it does great for a little no claims bonus earner and is a great economic little car.

1993 Vauxhall Corsa GLS 1.2i from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good little car which suits anyone

Faults:

Reversing light switch broke meaning no reversing lights which was replaced shortly after I purchased the car.

Hole appeared in driver side railing of the chassis due to excessive corroding (MOT Failure). Cause was due to production fault in early Corsa's where rain entered chassis through bonnet and couldn't get out. Fixed at Mot with simple welding over hole at reasonable cost.

Rear brakes leaked fluid over rear wheels (MOT Failure) due to washer wearing out. Cheap to fix, but needed new brake shoes.

General Comments:

This car drives like a dream even after 95,000 miles and is not too sluggish when accelerating from a standing start.

Engine produces fairly high levels of torque for a 1.2 which makes it quicker than most other cars of the same engine size.

The easiest car to parallel park and reverse. The view out of the back window is not as limiting as in some newer more modern cars.

Has enormous amounts of steering lock so getting out of tight spaces is a mere doddle.

Very economical with 35mpg on most journeys.

Handles well for a small car although not as good as new Fiesta's and Saxo's.

Not the most exciting car to drive, but certainly wins my vote because it looks sleek and gets me from 'A' to 'B'.

Seats are very comfortable and don't show signs of wear, a good driving position is easy to find.

There is plenty of headroom as I am 6'2 and nowhere near to banging my head. Plenty of space for any size passenger in the rear and the boot is of an acceptable size. It fits a golf trolley, golf bag and clubs in with room for another trolley.

Overall I am pleased with my 'L' reg Corsa and am looking forward to purchasing their nippy 1.4 SRI.

1993 Vauxhall Corsa LS 1.5 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Economic, sturdy, nippy, practical

Faults:

Replaced the handbrake cable at 45,000 miles.

Replaced the clutch at 80,000 miles.

Some minor rust problems, rectified at 85,000 miles.

General Comments:

Fantastic little car. Economical and nippy.

Test drove the 1.5d LS (lacked power), 1.5td GLS as well (comes with nice extras including two more doors). Would have preferred the GLS, but the 3 door was enjoyable to drive.

The 1.5td engine pack more punch than the smaller petrol engines, and costs less to run.

Sparse in way of gadgets and extras, but offset by seriously low maintenance costs.

If you need a reliable car without worrying about running and maintenance costs - then this is the car car for you.
