1998 Vauxhall Corsa GLS 1.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The car is now becoming an expensive problem

Faults:

Car feels like it is going to stall at low speeds.

Had air mass sensor changed recently as car was juddering at high speeds, and an orange light was coming on.

Told by garage it was the air mass sensor, so this was changed even though nothing was coming up on diagnostics.

Now there is a problem with the car when it is running at low speeds, but the engine light has remained off.

General Comments:

Car has been reasonably reliable up to now.

Does anyone have any comments which could help?

I don't know what's wrong with your car, but if you sign up to one of the many Corsa forums and post there with your issues. No doubt you'll soon have some answers. I can't imagine that what you have described would be major, but who knows.

1998 Vauxhall Corsa Breeze 1.4i 8v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Economical, good performance, great 1st car

Faults:

Nothing major, the fan belt squeals in cold weather and the tyres hit the mudflaps when cornering hard, but that is because I have 17" alloys on it.

General Comments:

The Corsa has good performance, especially off the mark.

Spins it front wheels easily.

The handling is good and very predictable, but can get twitchy at higher speeds.

Mine has power steering, which is quite rare for the old shape Corsas, and it is perfect and not too light or heavy, and makes parking easy.

It looks fantastic especially, as it has a eyelid boot spoiler, Lexus lights, nicely finished exhaust and 17" alloys. turns a few heads.

The seats are very supportive and comfortable, but the space between the front two seats is a bit tight, but there is plenty of legroom in the back and front, which is surprising for a car of this size. Not recommended for 5 people though.

It does offer a good ride, but makes a fuss of going over things like grids and small potholes, which other cars glide over.

It has exceptional fuel economy, especially when driven sensibly.

It has rather limited boot space, but is more than enough for weekly shop.

It has very low insurance (group 3), which is ideal for young drivers.

The 60bhp engine gives a nice growl at the higher revs.

The standard equipment is very basic, and it is rare to find a Corsa with electric windows and power steering.

It is very reliable, and has never not started first time, even in -3 degrees.

1998 Vauxhall Corsa Merit 1.2 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

I love my Corsa

Faults:

Totally shagged brakes at 52,000 miles, despite the pads eating the discs it still stoppped.

Was an easy, cheap fix. Vectra discs and pads fitted it, however were a pain to fit.

The rear brake cylinders were leaking on both wheels, again a problem.

Cam belt was changed at 50,000 miles, lucky as the water pump was just about to fall off. If your Corsa rattles when you rev and it's the same rattle it's the pump.

Eats wiper blades and tyres, the standard 145 R13s will not stop one of these. If you're keeping the 13" rims get 165/70 tyres and get good ones.

General Comments:

Love him, he's called chav and never let me down. Easy to service and maintain, nice and cheap, goes 350-400 miles on a 45 litre tank.

Wouldn't suggest it for a petite lady as the steering is very heavy.
