Quite a lot actually, but nothing other than high mileage can be blamed. Definitely the most reliable car I have or will ever own.
If your looking for comfort and speed think of getting something else. Now, as far as reliability, economy, safety (yes safety!) and "smiles per mile" goes, the Beetles been number one for the past 4 decades.
Like you, I really enjoy my Beetle. Mine is a 1971 Super that had 299,000 miles on it when I bought it in 1998. I drove it daily until June 2000 when I removed it from service to complete a full restoration that consumed a year of concentrated effort. Now the car has 318,000 miles on it and is ready for another 30 years service. In my view, the VW Type I is the best car ever made!
1967 Volkswagon Beetle.
I traded this car for my motorcycle 6 weeks ago, planning to use it on weekends and slowly restore it. I fell in love with it straightaway and am now using "Alphonso"as a daily driver. The carburetor has been replaced and the vehicle modified to electronic ignition. The gear throw is long so I was jerking when getting going at first, but have learned to use the ample torque to advantage since. The odometer reads 40K so I figure it must have at least 140K.I replaced the handbreak cable, am awaiting drums and semimetallic shoes, as well as used hubcaps bought on e bay. I, ve had it up to a stable 80mph, I think it might approach 90.The previous owner denied any engine work. Am using regular gas assuming annealing or previous valve job since it does fine and he never had any trouble doing the same. Frame is solid, there's some rust, but it was undercoated, and am cleaning it up. I plan to use it, have fun, slowly upgrade to a Porsche in sneak's clothing! So far so good!
