1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI from UK and Ireland - Comments

"It should be 100 times better than it is"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Firstly the drivers door has dropped slightly due to the weight of the door (2 door models).

The air mass sensor failed, resulting in no acceleration.

The car has intermittent revving problems; sounds like a minor misfire.

Drivers seat adjust handle snapped off.

Rear boot leaks rain water and smells damp in the car all the time.

Suspension feels hard.

General comments?

Wear and tear shows on this car even with low mileage, i.e steering wheel looks like it's done 100,000 miles.

The car has nice looks, good visibility, and feels safe.

If you haven't got a full service history, then chances are its been clocked. The wear on the steering wheel is one of the first things you should look for when trying to ascertain if the mileage is correct.

I agree; if the steering wheel is worn, you've been done.

That said, the build quality of the mk4 Golf is very patchy, but I'm not aware it affects the steering wheels.
