2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 from North America

Summary:

For better or worse, we love this car

Faults:

The trans control unit failed.

The relay which controls the blinker failed causing both blinkers to freeze mid-blink - unit replaced.

The drivers seat memory would not maintain its memory.

The head lamp switch went bad.

A small piece of plastic on the cup holder broke so I had to replace the entire unit at over $100.

The armrest latch broke.

The hinges on the glove-box broke.

The coolant system has spontaneously drained itself several times prompting the replacement of a small and expensive hose - twice.

General Comments:

We love our Jetta.

It handles beautifully and has ample power.

The interior bits should last longer. It is frustrating that this expensive car is falling apart around us.

The front seats are amazing - heated recliners.

The back seats are cramped.

The back seats fold down to provide a huge trunk capacity.

We bought our car over the Internet and received a car that had been the "test drive V6" vehicle at the dealership. It had 285 miles on it - 15 miles below what is considered "used". We have no idea what abuses this vehicle took prior to our owning it.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta TDI 1.7 turbo diesel from North America

Summary:

Great performance and value

Faults:

I had several problems after 50,000 miles. First my passenger side front window actuator broke. I paid $300.00 to get this fixed.

Then at approximately 75,000 miles my drivers side window actuator broke. My dealer fixed this for me at no cost.

At 90,000 miles my check engine light came on and I was told that my glow plugs needed to be replaced.

I paid for this and after another 8,000 miles the check engine light came back on. After a few attempts this was fixed by replacing a wiring harness that had to do with glow plugs. This was done at no cost to me.

I do have a broken glove box door and a broken arm rest and a broken cup holder. All in all the large things have been taken care of at very little cost to myself.

General Comments:

I am very pleased with my car. Volkswagen has taken care of me in all situations and my dealer Harpers Volkswagen, Knoxville, TN has been the greatest. I have always had my routine service completed by them and I think this is the reason for my satisfaction with their service department.

The car runs great and the seating is comfortable to be a small car.

I will be buying another one and would advice all buyers to use their dealer for service just as I have.

2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6 from North America

Summary:

You're supposed to taste lemons, not drive one!

Faults:

EVERYTHING!!!

The engine had numerous problems, I never knew a new vehicle needed its mass air flow sensor replaced 6 times...

And that the transmission would slam so hard into 3rd gear, resulting in the vehicle violently bucking forward. Also might I add that the transmission whined so loudly as you pressed the gas at any given time.

I was told by the dealer service people that: "That's just the way the vehicle drives." Considering I have owned 2 Chevrolet's and 1 Toyota before I purchased the Jetta, and never seen anything drive quite wreckless as the VW did. By the end of 2 years of my 4 year lease on the vehicle, the worthless 24k mile/or 2 year warranty was long over, and had no other choice, but to acquire www.lemonlaw.com and pursue a lawsuit... Not my style, however I did my part as a consumer and kept bringing the "brand new" vehicle in for numerous items to be corrected and fixed, however the car would usually be worse, or just the same upon driving it home from it being in the shop.

Did I mention the anti freeze leak? I brought it in to be fixed, and reported that when the engine was warm, if you walked by my Jetta, you can smell engine coolant overwhelmingly... Well, they "flushed the system" and did whatever else... and could not find anything wrong, got the car back, still smelt like engine coolant, I popped the hood, and there it was, THE ENGINE COOLANT LEAK! I, of all the service techs that worked on the car, found the leak!

General Comments:

This car handled nicely around turns.

However there were too many engine problems and transmission problems.
