2008 Volkswagen Jetta Comfortline 2.5L from North America

Summary:

Never buy a VW ever!!!

Faults:

I have had this car for over a year and a half, and cannot wait to return it at the end of my lease. My dealer is horrible. Always blames me for the problems.

Problems all before 30000km.

Carpet on the floor coming out after 200 km.

Squeaks and rattles from day one.

Door locks stopped working on passenger door.

Key door lock got stuck.

The whole outside door panel from rear passenger door is coming off.

Burns much more gas than is reasonable, regardless of driving style.

General Comments:

Looks nice and feels expensive, but is the quality of cheap Mexican labour and not German precision.

Hi,

I'm looking to buy an 07/08 Jetta, because I thought they were good cars. But after reading your review, I'm worried. Did you maybe just get a lemon car? My 4 year old Toyota's 5 speed transmission went out on me 2 years ago, so I'm nervous to get another "dud" car. I'm in the military and need a reliable car, because my pay doesn't allow for flexibility in spending! Please let me know what you think... aglunn@yahoo.com

If not a Jetta, what car would you suggest?

2008 Volkswagen Jetta TDI SE 1.9 turbo diesel base from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A good economical all rounder

Faults:

No major issues as yet.

Blew a tail light bulb already. VW have a habit of this.

General Comments:

Nice car.

Good MPG 45MPG hard driving.

55MPG average for handy driving.

TAX in Eire is CO2 rated, so this was good 156 euro per 12 months.

Not as comfortable as Passat, but then if you want a Passat, buy one.

Good all rounder.

I would go for red eye next time round, lags a few horse's when cold and pushing hard.

Seats comfortable/has all the mod cons; A/C traction control etc.

2008 Volkswagen Jetta TSI 2.0 turbo petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Sporty but elegant

Faults:

DSG seems to not find the gear properly at times. For example if you are taking off while its in second, sometimes when it goes to third there is a big kick before it gets to the next gear. Not sure if DSG is confused if it needs to go up or down a gear?

General Comments:

The car is relatively quick but I think there should be some performance options available. There are chip upgrades that can increase your car from 147kw to around 190kw to complete with Subaru Liberty turbos etc.

I have experienced intermittent transmission "flaring" I think it is called, (engine RPM increase between gears under acceleration) in several Allison electronic light and medium truck transmissions that I wondered about. Both transmissions continued a life of extreme use, without problems. I usually just backed out of the throttle, and transmission stopped fooling around and went into gear.

This usually happened under moderate acceleration. I wonder if engine sensors were showing information that did not jive, or if the transmission was on the edge of wide open throttle settings.

Perhaps transmission was just saying "ouch, take it easy on me".
