My Jetta smells also, everyone thinks I'm crazy, but especially if I'm in the back seat I get dizzy and sick feeling, only if I'm driving do I not feel this way and I think its because I'm concentrating on driving instead. My boyfriend is always asking me "baby, whys your car smell like crayons..." Its really aggravating and I'm looking to sell or trade.

When I was younger, we had a 1977 VW Westfalia Camper van that would get odd odors if it sat for a day or two. We also had a 1979 Mercedes 240D that would smell of diesel if it had been sitting for a day or two. My sister's first car, a 1986 VW Golf, also had weird odors. Then, my friend's 2001 Jetta smelled a little off. I notice a pattern here. German cars have odors, and VW seems to be the king of odor-infested automobiles. Later Mercedes don't seem to have the weird smells and my '94 BMW has only a "new car" smell. Maybe VW has not discovered odor-free materials like the rest of the German automakers have.

My 2001 Jetta had the same problem and my eyes would burn and water, but it's fine now. I wouldn't trade my Jetta for the world. I love it.

The smell could be a burning belt or an other thing engine-related.

This guy seems to have found a dealership that finally admitted what the smell is:

The smell is foul. I hope there's a civil suit one day for it.

2004 Used Jetta 1.8T just bought this year. It has about 42k miles on it and had one owner.

It, too, has a very strong "New Car" smell especially when I open the sun roof. My eyes and nose burn, I get dizzy and so on.

Really do love the car but difficult to spend long periods of time in it.

Any solutions?
