2002 Volkswagen Lupo E 1.7SDI from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Why ever did VW stop making it?

Faults:

The airbag light on the dashboard is permanently on whilst driving.

General Comments:

We've had our Lupo Diesel for more than 4 years from new and it's been an absolutely excellent car.

Despite many short journeys and often on a cold engine the car is highly economical and returns an average of 60mpg. More on a long run. Its CO2 emissions at 119g/Km means that the tax disc is only $50 (pounds) per year.

The car has been 100% reliable and has never let us down yet. Well done Volkswagen for making an excellent car.

We would part ex for a new VW Fox, but VW UK refuses to import the diesel Fox. They're restricted to mainland Europe dealers only. The Fox's petrol economy just doesn't compare to our Lupo Diesel's mpg. The Lupo's an absolute winner and we're sticking with it.

2002 Volkswagen Lupo 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A reliable little gem

Faults:

There have been no faults whatsoever.

General Comments:

I am by no means an avid car fanatic, but felt compelled to write in about the fantastic machine that is the Volkswagon Lupo.

It is a very nippy little car and although the road handling leaves a little to be desired it makes for a good, nippy drive.

The best thing about it is the fact it is extremely reliable and well built. I have never been let down by it once in any way shape or form.

The best thing about this car is the fact it has heaps of character and I have been told many times "It looks like it's wearing a big smile"

It is cheap to run and goes very easy on petrol.

Although people complain about the lack of space, the little car's character more than makes up for it.

I would most definately recommend buying this car, I love it!

2002 Volkswagen Lupo GTi 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Exclusive, entertaining babe magnet

Faults:

Broken battery box cover

Poorly aligned bonnet and tailgate

Near side electric window regulator and motor failed

Squeaking tailgate.

General Comments:

What a great little car. Excellent performance, engine and 6 speed gearbox

Looks great and really gets the attention when you drive around, this is not a car for shy people!

A few minor faults, but what car doesn't have them, and you soon forget the faults when driving the thing.

The best headlights I've ever used, all other headlights seem so poor after wards

Ice blue instrument illumination a work of art

Looks poorly equipped when looking at the buttons on the dashboard, but most of the good stuff is under the bonnet

Ride height of the car way too high, though the compromise between ride and handling is superb. I've lowered mine, now there is no body roll and it corners like nothing else this side of a 700kg sports car

It's not a MINI Cooper, which can only be a good thing, exclusivity brings its own rewards. The engine is superb in combination with the 6 speed gearbox, and Coopers will be a speck in the mirror.

2002 Volkswagen Lupo GTi 6-Speed 1.6 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A pocket rocket that always puts a smile on my face

Faults:

The remote-alarm mechanism in the key was faulty.

Rear windscreen wiper-washer failed.

General Comments:

The car has great performance and the six speed gearbox is a pleasure to use.

The engine is getting smoother and more economical with age.

The headlights are superb.

The cabin is remarkably roomy, particularly for the driver and front passenger.

Unlike some reviewers, I have experienced no rattles or creaks with the dashboard and interior trim.

The seats could be more supportive.

Very good motorway manners and comfortable over long distances.

The car looks great in GTi trim, particularly in black.

Better looks, better engine, better performance and more exclusive than a Mini Cooper.

Totally agree - good points on my Lupo GTI:

6 gear box - fantastic.

Plenty of room for myself and hubby on long journey's up north.

The acceleration makes the car fun and easy to drive.

Only ever seen two other GTI's on the road!

Bad points:

Temperature gadge broke within first week of purchase

Light alarm faulty - new driver lock needed

New exhaust needed fitting

Passenger window mechanics broke three times in as many weeks!

(All this and I've only had the car 9 months - but I love it!)

Love my lupo gti! black leather interior, fast, fun to drive, and always makes me smile! the gearbox is a gem, steering perfectly weighted with awesome feel, and blistering performance! especially with super-unleaded petrol.

Bad points - breather pipe fault in first week of ownership, sorted quickly by my local dealer, rear high-level brake light keeps filling up with water, and the rear wiper button on the wiper stalk is a bit dodgy, but I still LOVE this car!!
