1990 Volkswagen Polo Ranger 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap, reliable motoring, plenty of character.

Faults:

The clutch was replaced at about 75000 miles.

The exhaust was changed about 6 months ago.

The fuel tank was changed about 2 years ago. This is a common problem; check yours!

The rear wiper motor looked like it had caught fire, it only cost £10 to replace though.

General Comments:

Luckily, All this happened before I got it, except for the wiper motor.

The car is fast, but the handling is not up to much; there is plenty of body roll in the corners.

Also, I think the gear ratios are too low, you can go round all corners in 3rd gear and you can do 25mph in 5th!

It is really noisy on the motorway too. Once you get up to 80mph, you get a loud roar from the engine.

There is plenty of rust on the sills and around the bonnet, but its only on the surface.

A blocked drainage hole under the bonnet caused a lot of problems, the metal under the battery had rusted through into the drivers foot-well. So my feet kept getting wet when the car had been stood in the rain.

There were a couple of times when it seemingly stalled for no reason, and it was then difficult to restart. I found that the earth strap for the engine was loose.

It does not like cold starts in the wet either.

On the plus side, everyone says it has comfortable seats!

1990 Volkswagen Polo CL Saloon 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great little car

Faults:

Head gasket went at 76,000 miles, performed top end overhaul, which improved pick-up and general performance.

Minor battery problems, nothing else serious.

General Comments:

A brilliant car, and very rare - I have only ever seen one on the road like it (a 90-94 saloon). Mine's in mint condition and I love it to bits. It's my first car so I haven't much experience, but I know it's a good car.

Huge boot.

35-42 MPG. Good ride.

Hi mate, I've got one, you're right, these are very rare.

1990 Volkswagen Polo C 1.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Solid reliable bargain!

Faults:

New clutch, brake pads and handbrake unit!

Warm air inlet pipe.

Door handle.

Boot lock, but fixed with WD40.

Driver's side window winder.

Head gasket.

General Comments:

Not fast but can be fun to drive, puts other 1 litres to shame!

Handling could be better, but could be worse.

No limiter means the engine can be revved very high!

Very reliable and quite economical, ideal first car, now moving on to a 1993 Polo Coupe 1.0, as sadly this car came to an end involving a slippery road!

Happy to see that others are enjoying their Polos as much as I am. I've a 1.0 Classic C, I've driven other 1.0s and this is only one that makes you feel good, always a good purr from the engine.

When serviced well I fill up the tank and drive forever!!!! And it is so easy to work on, never having done much car work in the past I have learnt to do all the work on this car myself.

A pleasure to own.

1990 Volkswagen Polo Country 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Other than a snapped clutch cable, nothing.

General Comments:

We have had the car for six years and have done 60K in it. It still runs as sweet as a nut and has never failed to start. Bodywork just starting to bubble here and there. Ride jolty on rough sufaces, but quiet and smooth on the motorway.
