1995 Volkswagen Polo 1.3 from Slovenia

Summary:

Small car for two

Faults:

After few years the interior plastics got a lot of cracks because they were made in Spain.

Changed the clutch at 87.000 km.

Changed the key-code reader at 100.000 km.

General Comments:

A shame for Volkswagen because you expect a quality car.

1995 Volkswagen Polo CL 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great little super mini

Faults:

The rear window cable snapped, this cost £25 to replace from the VW dealer.

The interior rattles slightly.

General Comments:

The car always starts first time.

The car still looks good even though it is 8 years old.

In low gears it is quite nippy, but can be sluggish on motorways.

The extras such as power steering, electric windows and a central locking alarm are an added bonus.

The car holds its value extremely well, and when polished it still looks like new (it is metallic blue)

1995 Volkswagen Polo GLX 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fantastic, reliable and a bargain

Faults:

Mainly wear and tear on the car over the past 4 years or so.

The throttle body sustained a fault at around 40,000 miles and was replaced under warranty.

Shock absorbers were replaced around 80 - 90,000 miles (the rear shock bump stops had disintegrated! so worthwhile check to make each year)

Wheel Bearings last around 40,000 miles and the gearbox had to be replaced recently as it developed a whining fault - it had around 100,000 miles on it - which is extremely good as the car is driven hard.

The engine has hardly seen anything replaced at all and as any VW engine seems to go on and on - although the head gasket blew around 75,000 miles.

General wear and tear items such as plug leads & the battery have been replaced. I currently use Mobil 1 15w/50w.

The coil pack went around 80,000 miles after it had been serviced - luckily I had only just driven out of the dealership when it went! I had this replaced free of charge!! wooohoo.

The front seats had to be replaced as one of the drivers seat welds had broken, these were replaced with sports seats which are far more comfortable on longer journeys.

General Comments:

An all round superb little car that has given me no major problems whatsoever.

I plan on keeping it for the next 10 years or so as I can't bear to part with it! lol.

I am really impressed with its performance and would highly recommend the Polo range to anyone :)

1995 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 from Germany

Summary:

A shame for Volkswagen

Faults:

Too much.

At 15,000km the plastic near the radio fell of - warranty.

At 60,000km the clutch was changed, unbelievable, because I mainly drove on highways.

At 90,000km the front brakes (disc) were changed.

At 100,000km while I was driving on the highway, the oil from the transmission ran out.

Then I sold it - it was just too much for a car which should be at the top in its class - not even near - my previous Daewoo was more reliable!!

General Comments:

It would be the best car in its class if the reliability marks were be better. A lot of my friends also had Polo's and all had problems!

Now I drive a Nissan Almera and this is reliable car.

1995 Volkswagen Polo CL 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very good supermini

Faults:

Clock after 1 month - instrument panel replaced.

Exhaust.

Rattle apparently behind the dash cured by foam under the bonnet at the air duct.

General Comments:

Excellent performance belies relatively low bhp. It's a great pity they don't have this engine option now.

Good build quality.

Feels like a bigger car.

Quiet & comfortable.

Understeer when pressed hard on sharp bends, otherwise quite sporty handling (roll bar standard on a 1.6).

Poor visibility. Blind spot to the rear quarter resulted in an accident. Can't see the extremities when parking and the curved sides don't help.

Poor ventilation - lack of a recirculation option and no provision for cool air to the face with the heater on.
