1996 Volvo 940 SE 2.3 turbo LPT 135bhp from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great simple reliable motoring

Faults:

When purchased radiator was leaking. Fitted new Nissens radiator.

AC condenser replaced by me.

Fuel pump replaced by myself.

For recent MOT needed lower universal steering joint and a nearside ball joint.

Mostly just wear or age related.

General Comments:

Bought my 1996 Volvo 940 SE LPT auto estate in 2016 for £250.

It was a much neglected car, but put some time and money into it.

B230FK Engine. AW70/1 Auto gearbox. Low pressure turbo with intercooler.

Replaced all disks/pads all round and brake hoses.

New water pump and timing belt.

Replaced cracked headlamp glass

Fitted all new radiator and turbo coolant hoses.

New radiator.

Gearbox drain/refil. Also diff.

New genuine Volvo/Bosch ignition components.

Replaced all 4 door cards as rippled. Common on the 940.

No engine, gearbox or electrical issues.

AC leaked again soon after new radiator and re-gas. Needs bigger O rings to aftermarket condenser. Not worked for 3 years now.

No welding needed.

Needed lower steering universal joint and ball joint for MOT. UJ was used as NLA at Volvo.

Needs the sunroof drains clearing, currently taped up. Need to investigate recent knocking from offside suspension. Going to fit grey leather seats.

Drives well, comfy, good reliable load lugger. Used as my works van. Like the automatic as it's great in traffic. Easy to service/work on.

Great turning circle. Would have another 940 or 240.

Now on 205,000 miles.

Good review, 80s and 90s is when Volvo were at their best.

Nowadays Volvo and most post year 2000 cars are all the same, electronic faults and general shortfalls in quality. Of course cars have come a long way in regards safety and economy; my current 2013 S60 is an amazing car, fast and economical, but does not compare to the reliability of my fathers 1994 Volvo 850, which lasted over 20 years. Would love a 1990's Volvo, unfortunately though as an everyday car 25 miles per gallon is just not practical.

As electronics and plastic replaced the simplicity of the 80's and 90's Volvos, maintaining a late model creates numerous challenges performing simple PM. While the supply of older Volvos dwindles, the craft of restoration and the techniques required will be lost. The poster has gained valuable knowledge and appreciates good design. Imagine today's autos without a spare tire, window regulators that require periodic replacement, and dip stick less transmissions just to name a few design enhancements. Remember, old is gold in the Volvos.

These Volvos are great cars. I have run one as a daily driver for the last 12 years. There are many more fuel efficient cars around, but when you consider the small amount I paid for it many years ago, I do not mind spending a bit more filling it with fuel. Where I live rust is no concern; it is in as good condition as when bought, and is easily the oldest car in most car parks around here.

1996 Volvo 940 GLE HPT Turbo 2.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Nothing to match it

Faults:

Absolutely nothing apart from a couple of bulbs.

Speedo sticks occasionally, but a sharp tap close to the needle always makes it see sense!

General Comments:

This is my third Volvo. I've had a 240 GLE and and 940 GLE Turbo previously. Main reason for buying is the ease of being able to service it without needing an "ology" to open the bonnet. What I save on servicing costs makes the car a dream to own.

These cars are seriously good value for money, handle like they are on rails, and for the money, there's nothing to touch them.

Comment from our local dealer (not the selling dealer).

"Look after it, and it will last you for ever" "These were the best model Volvo ever produced". I'd buy it off you today, and have it sold by lunchtime!!
