Faults:

Minor oil leaks at the valve cover gaskets.

The clutch makes a bit of noise after 100,000 km; fortunately, I was able to fix it without it costing me much.

Although it produces 146 hp, it is a heavy car, and the response at low RPMs can feel sluggish.

The rear seats and the trunk are a bit tight, though comfortable.

Minor issues causing noise and play in the front suspension, specifically in the bushings.

General Comments:

Although it is a compact car that may look small from the outside, it is a very spacious and comfortable vehicle on the inside.

The large number of windows enhances visibility, and the V50 offers excellent all-round views, with the sole exception of the slightly thicker A-pillars. Naturally, Volvo has always focused on safety, meaning that reinforcing the passenger compartment is a top priority. This, combined with the integration of airbags, results in wider A-pillars.

It is a very safe car; the door panel design is adapted to the SIPS (Side Impact Protection System).

As for the styling, this has been integrated remarkably well, maintaining the robustness of the rear doors and the placement of the window switches.

The dashboard looks a bit dated. The instruments also look somewhat plain; so, even though the quality remains very high, with high-quality plastics on the dashboard and smooth metal on the center console, it doesn't look quite as modern in this regard. However, I like it, so I don't see that as a negative.

The cloth seats retain that soft fabric, featuring contrast stitching and easy-to-clean properties that make them especially practical. They are very comfortable, even though they feel a bit firm at first, and, despite the dashboard design, they look quite elegant.

The engine is a bit underpowered for my taste, though it is fuel-efficient and reliable, like any Volvo.

Ride is extremely smooth (driving it is a real luxury) and it performs very well on the highway and on long trips; it is perfect for enjoying with the family.

Braking is quick and powerful, with plenty of assistance, and the steering is quite good, though it feels somewhat numb. It is well-balanced and corners like a sedan with decent suspension. In terms of handling, it could be described as competent rather than sporty.

The car is excellent, especially in terms of practicality, given the type of vehicle it is. It is safe and efficient, offers decent space for such a small car, and makes loading and unloading items easy.

It isn't as expensive as other Volvos, yet it is far more luxurious than any competing Volkswagen or Toyota.

Faults:

Engine changed noise. Advised by the dealer that the cam timing chain had jumped a tooth.

Stop start, stopped working!

General Comments:

I was not impressed by this car, which was a shame!

It was a company car that I managed to get rid of. The list price is high and the spec is low. The Skoda Octavia is bigger, cheaper and had more equipment!

I was expecting a little more!

The boot is very small for an estate car, and very shallow; even my laptop pilots type bag could not be upright, as the handle would not let the cover for the boot close.

The engine had enough power for most things, but the car felt heavy, which hit engine power. It's a shame, because the handling was good.

The interior was bland, and the seats, although supportive and comfortable, were made of some sort of potato sacking material; very hard wearing, but not pleasant.

I took the car in for a service, and was advised it needed some engine work. The car has a timing belt and twin cams, which are chain driven. One of the cams had jumped a tooth, narrowly missing an engine disaster!

I think my car was the 'ES' spec. If you are going to get a V50, buy a better model with a bigger engine. There was a good car in there trying to get out; it just needed more of everything!
