1997 Volvo V70 2.5 10v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

It looks smashing

Faults:

Front passenger side suspension almost completely replaced and still clunking!

Rear wash wipe has never worked.

Rear electric window packed in.

Boot lock dodgy.

One headlight wiper jammed then snapped off.

Wash wipe stuck on.

Rear seat belt broken.

General Comments:

OK so I know these are all faults to be expected with a car of such a mileage, but it's just one after another.

I have always owned post 100,000 mile cars, and bought the Volvo as they are meant to be tanks, but it has became a real pain.

The front suspension has been a nightmare. I have had the wishbone, CV joint and stub pin replaced, and it's still not right!

Because of this, this is the third set of tyres on the front. NOT PLEASED! The last set (non budget as a treat to myself) lasted a whole 5000 miles, and were down to the wire on the inside. Lucky I noticed when I did.

My wash wipe has stuck on. I had to take the fuse out.

The most annoying thing is that with the side lights on (I switched the thing so that they are not on all the time, as that is lame) when you switch the engine off, the lights on the dash go off, though the side lights are still on. No warning. Flat batteries ahoy!

It guzzles the fuel, but is still as slow as a week in the jail.

I think my rear strut is away. I want to cry.

It's real comfy mind you.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

Judging by the faults you mentioned, I wouldn't be surprised if your car has been involved in a front end crash at some stage? My 1998 S70 is great and I've only changed the (already worn) front tyres once in over 30,000 miles! The car has been great!

I have a 1997 V70- 100K miles, but really well looked after by previous owners.

It seems excessively harsh in regard to ride ie. awful over the rough road surfaces / doesn't soak up even minor stuff.

I know the profiles are lower than my earlier model, but is this a trait of the vehicle? Hardly a magic carpet ride!

Summary:

A good car with some annoying disadvantages

Faults:

Rear door lock does not always work when temperature drops below -10 C degrees.

Front wheel ball bearing got worn out and was extremely expensive to replace.

Sun roof leakage, I fixed this with silicone spray on the rubber seals.

There are also some other random things that have gone wrong, but I find those things acceptable for a car of this age since it is used daily.

General Comments:

This car has always taken me where I needed to go. That is better than many other cars I have learned...

It is a comfortable car on good roads (!), and it handles OK, and it also performs well. I like the way the engine sounds when pushed too. The car also has plenty of room.

Generally, I'm really satisfied with this car. But then there are some things that I find very annoying.

The gas consumption in urban driving is unacceptable!!

The dashboard and the doors sound like they could fall off when driving roads that are not perfect. There are actually way too many rattles and squeaks for a car that is this expensive. It also feels like every dent in the road "echoes" in the body of this car. Don't know if this is a problem with all V70s or if it's just mine that has something wrong with it. It's been driven on bad roads by the previous owner I suspect.

If you are considering buying this car, I would recommend a Saab 9-5 instead. I have plenty of experience of the 9-5, and I'd say that it's better in most areas. But this Volvo is not bad either.
