Yes you may add me to the list of 04 XC90 T6 owners buying a new tranny at 69K. Why has some lawyer taken up a class action suit? Maybe FORD/VOLVO should take some bailout $$$$$$$ and build a replacement tranny WITHOUT all the problems that seem to be build into the T6. Come on LAWYERS, take this thing on!!!

One person commented they would like a website built... I will do it! 77K transmission the latest of many problems!!! joebstuff+volvo@gmail.com contact me so we can arrange publicity.
Took our '04 XC90 T6 (~73,000 miles) to the dealer this am after hearing an unusual howling sound that would only go away if I gave the car gas. No warning light or any other issues but knew it didn't sound right. Service advisor says there's no mixing of fluids (actually showed us the tube, whatever) but likely the transmission and the extended warranty company needs to send an adjuster to assess coverage. Now I'm reading all of these problems and wonder why the dog and pony show at the dealer. This is the first major problem I've encountered. Tires, brakes and rotors changed once. 41 complaints on NHTSA's website and still no investigation.
I'll hear the verdict from the dealer in 1-2 days but it probably won't be what I want to hear. Will post an update.
My wife's 2003 T6 just got the same verdict (new transmission and axle) from the Volvo dealer, and they asked for $7k! That night I worked my magic and sent a legal letter to several key executives (Volvo and Ford) with some specific facts about the high incidence of fault of these parts, and defined the specific action I would take if they didn't remedy the situation in 24 hours. I got a call from my dealer at 9 AM the next day saying they didn't know what I did, but "corporate" called and said that they would cover 100% of the repair and provide a loaner for the week of work required. I now have the car back with a written one year warranty.
Anyone with a similar problem that is interested in my advocacy services feel free to e-mail me with the details: acom@yahoo.com.
New Zealand, new vehicle, 2003 XC 90 T6 transmission failure at 60000 kms.
Initial offer from importer 10%-15% parts and labour, then 50% parts and labour... hmm.
Here is another XC90 to add to the list. My 2004 T6 AWD had a Transmission Service Urgent light appear after only 35,000 miles. I brought the car to the dealer and the said it needed a update to the vehicles computer and a complete flush of the system to correct the problem. Two weeks after this was done the light was on again and the dealership then said I need a new transmission. My Volvo has low miles for an 04 with only the 35,000. No vehicle should need a new trans at this point.
I am another member of the Volvo lousy transmission club. Mine failed at 62,000 miles. I submitted a complaint to the NHTSA since Volvo will not cover any repairs. I suggest everyone submit a complaint as well. There are currently 70 complaints on file and I see well over 300 entries here. If enough of us submit complaints, maybe the NHTSA will investigate Volvo. Here is the link

Volvo XC90 T6 2004 (97K kms) my transmission service urgent message just came on tonight. I just had this in for the 96K service about 2 weeks ago, which wasn't cheap here in Toronto Canada. I have the extended warranty coverage, which thankfully I added, since it was a used vehicle when I picked it up. I'll see what the dealer says tomorrow. I'm guessing based on the shifting that it was trying to do, that a new transmission is on the horizon.

Well, add me to the list of transmission service urgent, my car (XC90 2004 T6) is currently in the shop. They are supposed to be doing the software upgrade that several posting state 'do not work'. A new transmission - $6,000.00. My car is currently at 72,000 miles and all service at the same Volvo Dealer. Add me to class action, and I will contact Volvo, can we all say class action! CJ- Dallas, TX
3-20-09 after 3 visits, software upgrade at a reduced price, the dealer finally replaced the transmission, radiator at no cost. The information obtained from this site assisted me in getting the work completed for FREE!!! so yell, if you have too. this is a known problem and not one person should have to pay. CJ - Dallas, TX
For those of you that are interested in pursuing a class action suit, I've included contact information for a Robert Green of GREEN WELLING LLP, located in S.F. California.
They have successfully litigated a case for Audi TT customers with a defective electronic panel.
I cannot personally pursue this issue because I currently have no outstanding damages with Volvo -- since my aftermarket warranty covered the cost of this mess.
However, for those of you that want to make Volvo accountable -- now's your chance. I have provided this atty. with all of the background info from the following Web sites:

I filed a lemon-law lawsuit in California with my 2001 V70XC a few years ago and won. This car was notorious for bad transmission problems during this year. Most manufacturers know the issues they have with their various models, and that's why they settle with these law firms.
I kept the car and they gave me a check for half the value of the car (12k) and the firm took 3k on top of that. The car was under a VIP extended warranty for 100k and so the transmission was replaced for free as well. Most states have Lemon-Laws now days -- however I believe this will not apply to a car that is out of warranty though. Lemon Law qualifiers in CA are 3-4 times in the shop for same issue or a certain amount of days in the shop for various issues.
Just thought that I would mention it.
I purchased a 2003 XC90 with 58,000 last month. I drove it for one week and was alerted there was a coolant leak. Took it back to the dealer and they replaced the coolant tank. I drove it for 5 days and my key would not turn the the engine over. It is currently having a chip in the steering wheel replaced and I asked them to check out the transmission as well. I noticed when I was parked on an incline facing down when I put the vehicle into reverse it would roll forward until I push the gas. This may be normal, but after coming across this site, I am worried I made a bad decision to buy this vehicle.
Thanks for all your postings; it saved me 5K. My 2003 XC90 T6 transmission failed at 70K. After contacting the Volvo customer representative - they covered the part costs and I ended with labor costs. Indeed the GM transmission is a problem for this trim and Volvo is aware of it. Overall it's a shame for Volvo, especially that the dealer does not offer any support in this matter (in the US - only bad experiences with the Volvo dealers). I will never buy Volvo again, not until they will be a stand alone company like old days. Good luck to everybody!
Another XC 90 Transmission story.
We have a 2004 XC 90 T-6 with 87,000 miles.
The dreaded transmission service urgent warning came on and I took to the dealer and got “the you have to replace the transmission and that will be $5,200 please”
I took some of the information from this forum and others and contacted the Volvo customer care line as another poster recommended and made sent an e-mail to the customer care center, called the customer care center and then spoke with then called and left a message with the dealer service manager.
After lunch the dealer service manger called me back and said Volvo would cover the cost of the transmission if I would pay the labor and misc. parts.
Bottom line this forum saved me the $2,700.
Thanks to all!
I also have a XC90T6 2004 in Thailand, and the transmission warning light came on about 54000KM's. Fortunately as it was covered under the warranty, it was replaced with no cost by Volvo.
