2005 XC90

At 60k miles on the road trip through the mountains, the transmission got stuck in 3rd gear. "Transmission service urgent" came on. Took it to the dealer, after reading some posts about Volvo replacing transmissions for free. Was planning on doing some b*tching and moaning, but didn't have to. The rep said that this is a common problem, and Volvo has been paying for these to be replaced, whether you have the warranty or not.

There is a lawsuit that a couple of people filed, and I believe they are seeking class-action status, so I think Volvo is doing this preemptively, so they can tell the judge: "look, we're taking care of it". I don't know for sure, but this makes sense.

Anyway, they've replaced the whole gear box, and the total cost was $0. The rep said that sometimes customers have to pay for alignment after the transmission work, but that should only be $150 or so.

Hi.

I have the same problem with my 2005 XC90.

The Volvo dealer gave us a quote today about $10000 to replace the transmission.

My trans in a 2004 XC90 was replaced too, and just under the warranty.

Now the drive shaft or u-joints are going!

I was thinking about buying one. They look like very nice SUVs, but no thanks.

XC90's are great cars if you avoid early T6 versions. Most models after the 2007 facelift give very few problems - I know 3 people with one (and then mine) with no problems whatsoever.

I am a mechanic, and talked to another mechanic today, who has a 2003 XC90 T6 for sale for $1500. Brand new Michelin tires on it. It is in limp mode, and he said that the Volvo dealer says it needs a new transmission. I scanned the internet and found hundreds of cases of bad trannys. My question: Can a 2007 and up transmission fit in this vehicle? I remember one person who said her shop put a newer one in, but had to modify it somehow. I would tackle this if it's possible, as it's a beautiful vehicle and I could invest my labor. Anyone know of a real fix? Thanks.

Do you know of an email address those of us who are in this situation could use?

So being a mechanic you discounted low battery. Wiring or bad harness. Low fluids first right? And code printout is known?
