Add me to the list. "Service Transmission Urgent" light popped at 66,000 miles.
Dealer, after diagnosis stating 3rd gear slipping and witnessing metal shaving in the drop pan, said new tranny needed at the tune of $6,000. I could not spend $6,000 for a repair on a car that would probably worth no more than $15,000. Besides, just two months ago I spent $2,000 for a repair on this car. That's $8,000 a within few months period! UNBELIEVABLE!
When asked if any assistance can be offered, dealer offered 10% discount on the part. No more than that. Ridiculous!
In complete disgust, I went to the Audi dealer next door to buy a Q7 with my XC90 as a trade in. (I was that furious.) Audi offered $6,000 as a trade in value. (They knew it'd cost $6,000 to fix the problem.) Hoping that Volvo would do better than its competition (I was willing to purchase another XC90. I know 08, 09 models don't have tranny problems. I know. I know. It sounds pretty crazy that I was actually going to buy another XC90 but truly, I was quite happy with XC90 up until now), But guess what? Volvo offered me $2,000. Yep. A lousy $2,000. How can they treat a loyal customer this way when I'm willing to give them yet another $50,000 worth of business despite all these problems.
I left the dealer disgusted and decided to call the customer care center and report the experience. I pleaded to the rep who was recording my case to include on the report of what happened at the Volvo dealer and how disappointing I was. To my pleasant surprise, they called me the next morning and told me that they will pick up the tab 100%. Car is in the shop and ready for pick up tomorrow. Although I'm happy, I'm still worried about this rebuilt tranny they are going to put in my car. I'm hoping it to last a few more years before getting rid of it.
I bought a 2003 Volvo XC90 two years ago. I love the vehicle. However, in November the urgent service transmission light came on. I took the vehicle to the mechanic and he told me that the transmission fluid is black and that I will soon need another transmission. I decided to research the problem and in doing so I found your comments. Even though I love my Volvo, I doubt if I will ever buy another one. This is the second Volvo I've owned and I find that they are just a tremendous amount of trouble. If a class action suit is filed I gladly join the crowd.
Add me to the XC90 T6 transmission failure group! Bought my 04' last winter and it has 78k on it now. I've contacted the CEO of Volvo Cars of North America and let her know I will never purchase another Volvo in my life.
This is rediculous. I cannot believe Volvo will not assume responsiblity for their faulty transmissions.
I am not happy to join this club. My Volvo with 44740 Miles got this message. I am going to dealer tomorrow to see what they can offer. I just bought this car 4 days ago. Lucky it's still under the dealer's warranty.
I went to the dealer today. He agree to change the gear for free as the car under his warranty. But he won't give me warranty for the new gear. My question is the new gear would be able to handle the powerful engine. I mean is there is any modification on the new gear or it is the same as old one. The dealer said this is new designed gear to handle this engine. But I do not believe him. Can anyone advice me?
Looks like I'm in the '04 T6 XC90 transmission failure club. Vehicle hesitates then jerks into gear when leaving a dead stop. 86,000 miles, all service done at Volvo dealership. Just had the transmission "upgrade" done and problem persists. A $46,000.00 tire eating (4), problem prone rolling nightmare!!!
Same person who left a comment on Nov. 14th.
2 weeks later after the replacement of the transmission, fuel pump is blown. UNBELIEVABLE.
Luckily, Volvo offers warranty on fuel pump up to 7 years/70,000 miles.
Odd. Why such a extended warranty on the fuel pump only?
Was going to cost me $1,500 if it wasn't the warranty.
No more volvo for me. Never again.
Volvo buyers beware!
I spent over $45,000 on a brand new 2004 Volvo XC90. My first transmission failed at about 30,000 miles under warranty. Volvo replaced the transmission at no cost. I was concerned this was a bad sign and asked the Volvo service guys if they were having this problem with other XC90s but they promised me this was "unheard of". My second transmission failed at 67,000 miles, just a few months past warranty. Volvo refuses to pick up the cost of replacing this transmission.
Have been car shopping this week because I refuse to give Volvo one more cent of my money to fix this absolute lemon of a car. I am only being offered $4000 for trade in. $4000 for a car that cost over $45,000 and is less than 5 years old.
Other expensive problems with my Volvo--excessive tire wear, countless problems with the CD changer (by the way, if the CD stops working, they have to send the changer to the manufacturer to get your CDs out--this takes months and on 3 of the 4 times this happened, my CDs were never returned), brake problems, etc.
I sold my Acura to friends when I bought the Volvo and they are still driving that Acura, with over 100,000 miles and NO PROBLEMS!
My '04 XC90 is having transmission problems; also going to try and extend the life with yet another fluid change. It is just outrageous that this vehicle is not reliable. My lawyer will help me get a new transmission and then I will trade.
Thanks to all for your posts. There were incredibly helpful. In the time since the dreaded Transmission Urgent message appeared (my wife, driving the car, called to tell me), I read through this thread, called around, and found a transmission-specialty place to do the worst-case job for $3000 (all before my wife got home). If it weren't for all your posts about the job prices, I would have NO idea what such work would cost. Thanks so much for sharing.
By the way, I took the car (2004 Volvo XC90) into the dealer THIS MORNING because the gear shifting "didn't feel right," but they said that there wasn't a message, and they couldn't replicate the problem, so they didn't do anything about it.
Apparently I am joining the ever popular "Volvo T6 XC90 failed transmission club".
We had $3000.00 of work done to my wife's Volvo two weeks ago, replacing the brakes, rotors, calipers, drive shaft, u-joint...and on the advice of the service center... we had the transmission fluid flushed...
2 days after that service the "urgent service" light came on, we took it back to the dealer who couldn't duplicate the problem. The light came on and went off for the next few days, and then stayed off for a week. Yesterday it came on again and the transmission is refusing to shift out of what feels like 3rd gear.
I stumbled across this site and now I'm going to do my best to beg Volvo for some kind of assistance. (Our vehicle has 86,000 miles on it).
Wish me luck...
...another one in the club.
XC90 T6 2004
49K on the odometer.
Rebuild required.
Luckily, the garage will offer a 3 year/50K warranty on the job.
Can only recommend to find a transmission place instead of an overpriced Volvo shop.
Doesn't change the fact that class action would be the right thing.
Add me to the list of failed T6 transmissions. 2005 XC90 T6 with 99,000+ miles.

Anyone on this forum savvy enough to create a XC90 transmission failure web page? I think that we need to start trying to capture exactly how many Volvo customers are dealing with this problem.
I don't know how to create a Web page, but I do know how to publicize it!
Thank you to everyone who has told their unfortunate stories. On my way home from work today I saw a beautiful 2004 X90 T6 in a used car dealer lot. My plan was to buy my wife a news year gift!! I have owned five Volvos in the past. 240 thru S-70. You probably saved my life and my check book.
I am ALL DONE with Volvo vehicles. On my way to the BMW dealer this weekend!! Thanks again.
