I've had the car for about 6 months now and I haven't had one major problem happen while I owned it. As someone else put in a review and I must testify to the same, the clock goes on and off when it feels like it.
Sometimes pushing the brake will put it on or sometimes even getting the engine up to like 6k RPM.
I've noticed on my RX-7 and other RX-7s around its age that the seats tear open at the seams a little.
Electrical problems are common, with the logicons and control devices.
The engine has worked totally fine for me, I was told that if the engine is treated well, it will last you up to 300k miles.
The heat on my car doesn't work, and that's a pain, especially since it's the winter now.
Overall, I love this car. I was lucky to have bought it, especially sooo cheap. I love the cars style, for an 80's car, it's not all boxy and has some nice style to it.
This car has a true sports car status. I like how low to the ground it is, it's a 2-seater, it handles turns very gracefully and it has power to pack behind all that.
I truly enjoy taking this car on windy roads because if you put the car in a turn, it takes it and the car is always screamin for more speed and another gear. I also love the rotary engine because it's soo smooth and it gives constant power.
The only downside however, is maintenance is a real pain. Parts cost an arm and a leg, for example, a new ashtray is $53 at its cheapest. I had to put a new exhaust on the car when I bought it (converters down). Meineke wanted $1500 for everything, Mazda wanted $4000!!! And thank God, I got it done in the South Bronx for $375.
Also, as a teenager, sometimes I wish I had more than 2 seats for friends and all, but it's nothing big.
So that's what I have to do to get the clock to light up, OK.
You could have gotten a cat back exhaust system by Monza for 269.95. It's a high flow system with two chrome tips on each muffler, so you have four chrome tips that look great and sounds awesome (plus 10%increase MPG and 5 more HP)
Man get dual fattys, roar down the streets and rebuild the engine and put a lil NOS in this baby and you will kill any car.
I have an 87 I traded a old mail car and $300 bucks for. Best trade I ever made! My car flooded quite often until I replaced a quarter sized plug above the manifold (only $2.10 from Mazda). I replaced the exhaust with generic larger pipe, and cat system. The electronics are truly possessed!
But, those problems aside, the Mazda is one tight handling car. Quite a bit of pep and very entertaining.
Yes the electrics on the Series 4 RX7 do seem to be 'possessed' although it has never posed any major problems to me.
Putting a high flow exhaust system on these cars makes the most amazing difference. My exhaust increased power by over 20hp and further gains were made with the assistance of a ram pod air filter. But it is a bit crazy as the whole lot cost me less than two replacement mufflers from Mazda!!!
I bought a 87 rx-7 turbo II it is faster than the corvettes that I have owned and camaros. There is nothing like blowing the doors off a new mustang in a small car like a rx-7.
