What things have gone wrong with the car?

Everything but the engine including seats, window lifting, the gear shift left in my hand once.

General comments?

After five years the car was total wreck but the engine starts first time.

I am from Yugoslavia and when I lived there before we moved to New Zealand we owned a Yugo 101 and it went fine!

It went perfectly fine and I give the car 8 out of 10.

Zastava/Yugo make good cars.

I still drive Z101 confort from 1979. The car is in perfect condition, with 90% original parts, and original engine and gearbox. Engine compression is still 9.5:1 after 172.096 km, and all mechanical things are O.K! I'm very satisfied with gearbox and sound of the engine.

I also drive an OPEL KADETT from 1991, and this car is very problematic. After seven years I must buy a new engine, and 50% of the other mechanical things. Plastic in the Zastava is not very good, but in the KADETT it's terrible!

Zastava's engine and sporty feeling make this car better than Opel, which is a car for old people!

I have Zastava 101 Lux 1978 and 210000 with the same motor. It's a good car.

I also have a Z 101 Lux manufactured in the year of 1979, and I must say that the quality of this car has already saved my life in critical situations. It's an excellent vehicle!

FYI

All Zastava/Yugo cars built in the 70's came with FIAT drivetrain, and had to adhere to Fiat quality policy.

After Zastava factory started doing things on their own...

Well the rest is history... *thinking about the yugo that flew of off Mackinak bridge...*

I have Yugo Sana, in Serbia called Florida and I must say that is very good car.

With Fiat engine 1.4 liters it's quite fast and car for whole family.

Plastic is a problem, but everything else it's OK.

Florida is same class with Golf 2,Renault 19,Opel Kadett.

It is much more space in cabin and in the boot too.

I hope so that the new model 'Yugo Florida In' with Peugeot engine 1.4 and 1.6 will be much better and have a better future!

The "Zastava 101" Also known as the "STOJADIN", is a fun great little car. I use to own one when I lived in Yugoslavia (Serbia) and it always ran fine. Now that I'm in Canada my car is much bigger and better. I enjoyed the "STOJADIN" when I owned it and did not have too many problems. I did not especially like the shifter, it doesn't look sporty enough.

ZASTAVA 101 is not the best car on this planet, but it is very nice, doesn't have a bad engine, but also it is not so beautiful. Eats to much fuel.

First reviewer comments that the compression is "Still 9.5:1"

This comment doesn't make any sense.

The compression ratio never changes.

If the car had covered a million miles, it would still be 9.5:1.

(Actually, in reality, with some carbon build-up, and some cylinder wear, the compression ratio actually increases over the years by a tiny amount over what it was when new.)

This is because compression ratio is the ratio of swept volume to combustion chamber volume.

Swept volume is determined by piston stroke and cylinder diameter. So with a little cylinder wear, bore will increase and swept volume will increase.

Combustion chamber volume will decrease with carbon build-up.

However, as piston rings wear, they may not seal so effectively after a few years, allowing some piston blow-by and a reduction of BMEP and consequent reduction in power.

Lesson over.

I drive Zastava 101 Confort from 1978. for almost a year now. I've got it as a present from my grandfather who still thinks it's a best car ever built. I must admit, I was surprised by quality & strenght of it's engine. After almost 30 years this car looks amazing, a real old timer!

But I'm planning to buy myself a new car anyway :)

Hi guys thanx for the input on my influence to buy a 1986 yugo gl or (Koral) in their native homeland. it was on a lot in mint condition (this is in December 2005) beige and only 45,000 kilometres on it I just brought it home. yer comments make me think I've made a good purchase. are their recurrent things that I should look for in a problematic area? thanx from Anthony in Vancouver Canada.

Problematic areas? Well, the very front edge of the front bumper, as well as the rear edge of the back bumper.

Oh yah, and everything in between.

Years ago I had a brand new car. i drove it for a week, and that is when, a drunk driver hit me with his truck. after that shock I did not drive for seven years. that is when I saw my Yugo 45.i looked at it, it was for sale and nobody wanted it. they all call it ugly.ugly?well maybe yes, although I find it cute. but we are talking about a car with personality and soul. made in 1985 this car has a wonderful machine. imagine that it is a 30 year old piece of machinery and it still goes as other cars who are brand new and they come up with proplems by their first year on the road.don't get me wrong. of course it is a car with problems mainly in the inside (seats e.t.c).i know someday I will buy a new car again. but for me, my zastava Yugo 45 made me overcome my fears, and my shock. and the fun I had with this car is unbelievable. and I guess that is why people love their cars. they are like our everyday companion.

Thanks for the comprehensive and detailed submission, (kindly offered by 13/12 commentator) which spells out, in such detail, "problematic areas" relevant to the Yugo. Such expert assistance is always invaluable, and greatly appreciated.
