2001 Nissan Sentra SE from North America - Comments

"The sane Civic alternative"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing has gone wrong with this car mechanically.

When a rock shattered my windshield when I was driving on the highway, and the dealership installed the new one, the seal around the windshield wasn't installed properly and began to peel off. This was promptly repaired by the Nissan dealership.

General comments?

The Nissan Sentra is probably the best car overall in its class.

With the over-priced and under-performing Honda Civic becoming ever more popular for whatever reason, people seem to forget that there are other options. The Nissan Sentra, particularly the SE with the optional performance package, delivers in a way that no stock compact car in its class can.

Options on my car include power moonroof, performance package with 7 speaker CD stereo system, 16" 6 spoke alloy wheels, performance H-rated low profile tires, and sport tuned suspension, as well as the rear spoiler, which, despite its total lack of functionality - this being a front wheel drive car - manages to conceal the somewhat ugly rear end of the car.

Performance is adequate with 0-60 times of just under 9 seconds equipped with the automatic transmission, or 7.8 with the manual if you can shift it correctly. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a well equipped, quick car on a relatively tight budget.

I know everyone loves their cars and you want to back yours up. There is no way that a sentra SE with any kind of stock performance package would be able to go from 0 to 60 in 7.8 seconds. Don't just regurgitate what the manufactures tell you. Maybe 7.8 seconds down a hill or something, but not on flat ground. Test it yourself, but those numbers are unbelievable. I own a honda civic and like both cars very much. My friend owns a sentra and I also like his car. Let me tell you that my car is claimed to go from 0 to 60 by the factory in 8.9 seconds and edmunds says it can reach the 60mph mark in 9.5 seconds. Testing I did on my car before it was modified produced times around 9.8 seconds and now after I have done some work on the car the numbers are around 8.5 seconds. Don't buy into hype! anyone can tell you that a car will be so fast or an aftermarket part will a so much, but research it before you just take someone's word for it who you have never met, who by the way is trying to sell you something. For example a Subaru Impreza WRX type STI has claims that it can go 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds. It can't, those numbers are more like 6.0 or 6.1. Nothing mean just don't take peoples' word for things like that.

Actually, Motortrend clocked this car at 7.9 seconds to 60 mph for the 1/01 issue. Obviously, there are a lot of variable that can affect the acceleration times of cars (altitude, temperature, tires, etc.). Personally, I drive a 2002 SE-R and I'm not sure that this car could even hit 0-60 in 7.9 seconds (5-speed) despite the 20 extra hp...

Darn. I was all set to get myself a Sentra with that jackrabbit 0-60 in 7.9. But after the civic owner pointed out that this was merely Nissan hype and probably would take a tick or two longer to get to 60 I think I will forget the whole thing. 2 seconds on an on ramp makes all the difference in the world in being able to move up 50 feet on another vehicle. Just kidding! Civics are good vehicles.

I had a pleasant introduction to a 2001 Sentra GXE last year.

Being happy owner of a 98 Chevy Prizm the plain sister of the ever popular and reliable Toyota Corrola (beauty is only skin deep) I was confused when I arrived at the assigned stall to get my rental car. They said at the counter it was going to be a Sentra and I said oh well I can live with an econobox looking thing. So I was taken aback to find the Sentra GXE and almost went back to the desk to insist they had given me a more expensive mid sized car by mistake. I checked it out and sure enough on the trunk lid it said Sentra GXE.

To my delight this car turned out to be a lot of fun to drive on my vacation through D.C. and Virginia with a much more comfortable ride and nice features than my Corolla.. ah..I mean Prizm. A much quieter ride and plenty of guts too.

The Sentra had plenty of poweer in all kinds of terrain and I'd like to get my hands on one so other peoples opinions on that vehicle are a big help. Thanks.

I purchased a Sentra SE 2001 in April of 2000 and I love it! It has all of the power I need or can use. It has great head room inside along with the back seat feel of a larger vehicle. I live in the city and it's great for parking. It also has the luxuries of a more expensive vehicle. I call it my mini-max! It has a moon roof, key-less entry and key-less trunk opening, which is really great when you're loaded down with shopping bags. It also has lots of trunk space for a small vehicle.

I currently have 13,500 miles on it and have not had one bit of trouble. I also drive two hours on the interstate to visit my son and the car has great pick-up and hugs the curves!

Great luxury car with compact pricing!

I recently purchased a Nissan Sentra SE at my wife's request, so I was a little reluctant to truly enjoy the car. I have to admit that I find the power a little lacking and am considering after market add ons to give a boost, however I do find the handling more than adequate and downright enjoyable. I have not actually timed the 0 - 60 time, and I'm not one to bother with fractions of seconds, but due to this review I will have to check that out. Overall I find the car to be one of the best performing family cars for the money.

My mother purchased a new 2001 Sentra XE and was not pleased with it at first. Neither was I. However, when she said she'd sell it, she convinced me to sell my Volkswagen Pointer and purchase her Sentra.

Personally I disliked Nissan cars because of the low-level seats they have and that at first I felt uncomfortable seating a few centimeters from the floor level! Also I have the impression that they are so light in weight, and I was used to heavier cars.

However, I must say that my Sentra is quite frugal in fuel consumption, has excellent inner space and has everything you might need for your daily life.

My car is manufactured in Mexico, and it performs perfectly in the heavy traffic of Mexico City. Even though the fuel consumption is supposed to be around 15.5 kilometers per liter, I've realized it is nearly 13.5 kilometers per liter. Nothing bad for an automatic car!!

Mexico is the number one market for Nissan cars, and they have gained a good reputation on reliability and economy. I needed to own a Sentra to notice why Nissan cars are so cherished and loved by their owners.

It appears like the Nissan Sentra sold in Mexico is a little more aesthetic than the one sold in the U.S., but the engine and features should be more or less the same.

I highly recommend the purchase of this car.

I've spoken personally to other sentra drivers who have the 2.0 liter engine and they are all super-pleased with the vehicle's performance. I own a GXE model and compared the insides of both models and was thoroughly impressed withe SE's. Plus, you at least get a sunroof as well as a

faster performing Sentra. 2.5 liter SE-R engine? Now we're talking performance! =)

I just bought the 2001 sentra SE, and it is quite fast. Its the fastest in its class for a 4 cyl engine, other than the Se-r, but that only came out in 2002. I had an Acura integra before, and Although I loved it with all my heart, the sentra might actually be faster. The integra only has a high reving engine, which is loud. The sentra is also lighter. If you do choose to get the sentra, make sure it the SE or SE-R. It makes all the diff. The GXE is like the civic, as it lags. Civics are overestimated interms of speed, unless you can wait for the 2006 SIR (and spend lots more money). The times clocked as other people wrote are a little overestimated, but not completely without sound. It is a quick car, and I have left civics in the dust (including a CRX). Also, it helps to know how to shift. My only complaint is it could have been a little more refined. THere are things that can be done to it though for cheap, such as simple tints etc... Don't forget, Nissan, in terms of speed has always been number one in its class. Find me a car in the 90's, for the equal price that could beat the maxima? Nissan makes speed. Just please get the SE with the sports package. Ant-sway, bigger tires, fogs, better sound, and tighter suspension.

I own a Sentra, 2001, se sr20de type engine. I'm really happy with it. I had it stock, then I added a INjen cool air intake (FULL), new headers and after market exaust. It had 75000 now 98000+ miles and it runs better than half the cars, that have half the miles. I would say it does 0-60 in 7.8 easy as pie. I have raced and beat. Integra, a few civics,1995-2006 3.8 mustangs, a jetta,1990 eagle talon (non turbo), 1999 Eclipse 2.0, A ford ranger V-6, a chevy 2500 truck, focus, ford fivehundred, fusion 2.5, and a sentra GXE, XE, and another SE stock. Non the less I have lost to a 4.6 Stang, turbo Eclipse, ford lightning and a 1.7 or 1.8 (not sure) Integra with mods. But overall this car is fun and I don't abuse it. I may race, but I do give it the tune ups whenever it needs em.

I have a 2001 Sentra SE. Best little car I've ever had, I have about 180 thousand k's on it, runs great. I use a 91 octane, synthetic oil. Great car. Everything is stock except the sound system and I put a after market intake on it. Runs really strong still. Looking at doing a few minor mods/inexpensive ones. Has anyone done any and how much did it effect the performance.

RESPOND BACK.

I am planning to buy a Nissan Sentra XE 2001 5spd which has already done 170 clicks... I dunno if it's a good deal or not. Any idea how many clicks sentra XE goes to maximum (I mean the engine life?)...

Also, is it a fair deal to spend 5k on this car... Any help will be appreciated...

Thanx.

I have a 2001 Sentra SE with 85k+ miles on it and have been the original owner since April of 2001.

I knew the SE-R was coming out, but had to buy a new car before that so I purchased the 2.0.

I'm pretty glad now as it gets better gas mileage than the 2.5. The 2.5 is heavier too, so the added horsepower gets eaten up a little anyways.

I haven't run a 1/4 mile, checked 0-60 times, or raced a SE-R though... in LA, I can't really reach 60 mph anywhere anymore so I don't care. You can see some pics of my mint condition ride http://www.mymooky.com/Pics/folderview.aspx?path=Miscellaneous%2fMy+2001+Sentra%2f&
