Broken key way on cam pulley, which bent all eight valves at 70mph on the M5. Interestingly a friend is working on a 1.9D Megane engine which also has the same problem. This appears to of been caused by a valve shim which jumped out of its pocket. Has anyone else had this problem with the 1.9D engine?

Living in wildest Somerset the no nonsense interior is hard wearing and easy to keep clean.
Fuel consumption at motorway speeds are fairly dismal. Adding a turbo as standard would turn it from a good to a great car.
I have same problem with a renault scenic 1.9td, 1997, luckily it was only 1 valve damaged, but my main problem is I went to Renault garage to get new shim which is 4.3mm in thickness, they told me the thickest shim available on their system is 3.7mm, which means valve clearance won't be right, have you had same prob?
My renault kangoo 1.9 diesel van had the same problem just before christmas (typical). Fortunately no damage was done to the valves/engine,I hope. By the time the garage had found and fixed the problem it cost me over £500. Apart from that the van was a good buy except, of course from the usual Renault electrical faults. I would still recommend them though.
I was advised by a renault dealer that the problem generally occurs when an asssociate belt is damaged. i. e alternator or fuel pump. This puts pressure on the cambelt drive wheel and breaks the key resulting in the wheel moving and altering the valve timing. So beware of damaged belts. Its probably worth changing the alternator and fuel pump belts every 30,000 miles.

Had two problems with my low mileage 2000 kangoo 1.4 auto, first was poor starting when cold turned out to be a crank sensor located on top of gearbox near engine, easy fix two small bolts and an electrical plug. Cost £15.99 local motor factors for part.
Second was a pain but a free fix central locking stopped working off the key, changed fob battery to no avail, then found key can go out of sinc with car if pressed too many times when out of range with car, leaving key and car on different frequencys.
To fix it get in car shut all doors press and hold interior door lock button on centre console for 6 seconds, release and press key fob twice, hey presto locking is now working perfect off key fob again.
That one will save you £70 of renault labour to " re programe key".
