2001 Land Rover Range Rover HSE from North America - Comments

"As overpriced as it is, the maintenance is still more expensive"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Automatic door locks won't unlock.

Navigation system broke at 1000k and dealer couldn't fix it.

Rear brakes seized.

Transmission was, and still is, stuck in 2nd gear, alternately awaiting repair or replacement for 2 months!

Adjustable suspension blew at the lowest setting.

Front passenger's side speaker rattled loose.

Oil leaks and burns like this engine had 200,000km!

General comments?

The most unreliable car I've ever owned, and I've owned Alfas, a restored Maserati and lemon Benz. By all accounts, my experience with the Range is typical; it's not a lemon.

I bought this vehicle because I wanted the ultimate on off-road capability, with the added luxury and prestige that I didn't have with the Land Cruiser.

The car is more luxurious and prestigious, but even at its best it wouldn't be as capable as my old vehicle. Given how often it breaks down, it's amazing that people dare to take it out of their driveways, never mind on off-roading trips.

If you want something off that will go where you want it to go and have enough luxury to make many happy, go with a Jeep.

I bought my range rover on October 2005. It is a 2001. I paid it 30.000 can. from a private seller who worked in a car dealership. This was his personal vehicle in tip top shape. Before buying it I brought it to Rover for inspection and was told that the car purs. Odometer read 80.000 km.

5 months later I will specify the problems I have with the car.

Let me mention that there is no more warranty.

Front windows won't close properly.

The right side mirror motor stopped working.

The sunroof jammed. The sub woofer makes severe low frequency noise, and most of the time the whole sound system does not work at all.

Engine burns 2 liters of coolant every 2 weeks. Does not leak it though. Out of 50 starts the range allows me 20. The other 30,I just leave it sit at home and take the sun because it doesn't want too start.

The engine light remains on even with no positive diagnostic problem. The srs light comes on from time to time. Steering wheel makes funny whistling sound. When I drive the car over potholes and brake near traffic lights, the ABS kicks in for no reason and makes the car slide and very dangerous.

I just bought a 2001 RR HSE 30th Anniversary Ed. This vehicle is top of the line. Any option you can imagine I have it. The two-tone leather, green carpet, chrome everything, you name it I have it. I have had this vehicle for two months. I paid $18,000 w/52k on the odometer. The back and passenger sits have never had a human in them. I purchased this from an older couple who bought it brand new, and had every service done at the dealership, with records. Have had not one problem w/this beast. I thank the lord for that. I have always wanted one since I was little. My parents were missionaries over in Indonesia and Haiti, and we always had an older range rover, which ran rather well. I just keep praying over our cars and thanking the lord for everything we have. Good luck all of you. Maybe a little prayer might help!

I see, so now all the problems people are having with Range Rovers/Land Rovers is because they aren't praying hard enough.

I wish people would write comments that had something to do with reality.

These vehicles are notoriously unreliable and are only sold because of a great marketing campaign. CAR magazine even when to Africa where these vehicles are allegedly "kings" and the people interviewed there said the trucks were too unreliable for the bush. They all drove Land Cruisers and always had.

And every long term road test on these vehicles in car magazines I've read, especially the LR3/Discovery models, has listed faults that wouldn't be acceptable in a Honda, Toyota, or even a GM product. And these vehicles are 1) new, and 2) over $50K on average.

But more to your point. It seems in the RR/Land Rover case the devil is in the details, not God.

"When in the course of human events", it is sad when something bursts your bubble. I was looking for something different out there. Not your usual vehicle. I couldn't find it, until I found the Range Rover! I fell in love with it the moment it caught my eye. I loved everything about it.

I felt it, like a fine piece of art. I thought it would be wise to search for comments on the Range Rover before buying it. I found this site and I'm sorry I did, but at the same time it is very lucky for me to have found it!

My search continues here at 50 signs.com. Wish me luck.

I might play it safe with a Toyota.

Well I am amazed by the comments that were made in the above!

Religious beliefs do not have any bearing on how reliable a car is. You must always go on the facts.

To the person that is still looking for the ultimate 4x4, you will not go wrong with a Toyota, but not the latest one as it is starting to have problems of its own.

The Range Rover has too many problems that need fixing, suspension, electrical etc, even though I must admit I love the Range Rover for its design etc, but you would have to have it as a second car or have plenty of money to keep her going.

If you need a reliable 4x4,go for an older Toyota, Nissan, (Isuzu pre 1995). I have a Isuzu Bighorn 3.1 and it is bomb proof. The Range Rover is a lovely car, but it don't cut the mustard long term.
