"Unreliable"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I have a 2004 Liberty Limited. A couple of week ago, I was traveling on a rural road, following another vehicle. When I started to go around a right curve in the road, the car would not steer to the right. As I crossed the left lane, I saw a Dodge Ram pick up headed at me, so I tried to steer to the left, but the car wouldn't turn to the left either. The pick up ended up hitting my jeep at the rear axle, and I continued into the ditch. My jeep rolled onto the driver's side, and then back up onto the wheels. My jeep sustained extensive damage, but the air bags never deployed. The driveline is missing, and we have yet to be able to determine why the car wouldn't steer. I'm looking for anybody that may have had a similar incident regarding the steering of the 04 Liberty. If anybody has experienced a similar problem, please let me know.

General comments?

Ya know, instead of making jokes about an unfortunate accident, perhaps you should be more concerned about the fact of how is the writer still alive today to tell the story!

Perhaps a faulty power steering pump is to blame for this terrible accident. But at the same time, the Liberty did it's job and kept you safe, and that's the most important thing.

Sorry to hear about your accident.

It's OK to joke because the owner is alive and well enough apparently to write in and grovel.

Reviews like that really makes you think twice before buying a Jeep Liberty.. Though I have to say that the car looks great (in my opinion looks better than the LR3),and people inside it seem to have a great time..

Does anyone know of any Chinese manufactured Libertys? I live in Egypt and ppl say that Liberty's in Egypt are made in China! can anyone confirm that?

If the American Liberty's have such problems then I wouldn't want to be in a Chinese one!..

My first suspect would be the power steering pump as well. You could still have turned the wheels, but the wheel wouldn't have been as responsive as you expected. You can turn the steering wheel even when the power steering goes out. Culprits for that might be 1) you never check the power steering fluid level; 2) one of the hoses popped off the pump or a stone had cut a hose, allowing loss of pressure; 3) the drive belt for the power steering pump popped off (possibly the serpentine belt drives this?). It's hard to know if the wheel really locked, or if it just felt like it locked to you. If it actually locked, it could have been a problem with the anti-theft steering lock in the ignition. You also didn't tell us whether the steering wheel would turn, like did you turn the wheel and the car wouldn't steer?

Hello,

in response to your comment I just purchased a 2003 jeep liberty, and went to car-fax.com. it told me there was a safety recall on the lower ball joints. where water could enter and corrode and seperate causing a loss of steering control and cause a crash without warning. safety recall f23. go to jeep. com and find out more info for years 2002-2006.
