Power antenna went crazy after a year of ownership.
She was very good to me in the 4 years that I owned her.
While I look back, I decided I wanted to review an old friend, my 1978 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham De'Elegance. I have always been very fortunate with my financial position, and since been able to afford these beastly, elegant cars. I was a Cadillac man since I was 26, only settling for the most luxurious models avaliable. My cars have always been in tip-top shape during the four years that I own them. This Cadillac was no different. It was my pride and joy, well aside from my three children and wife. My family has always liked the cars that I bring home, even so much that they torture them with spills and dings, which I repair as soon as possible. Most of her weekends were spent being cleaned and waxed by her loving owner, or proudly serving in a relaxing trip to the lake. She gave no complaints throughout her pampered life, except for one time I remember with vivid detail like it was yesterday. Me and my family were inside eating dinner, when my son went out to the garage to get milk. He came back inside seconds later with a petrified look on his face. He came in and sat down, and siad "Dad, your car is possessed!" We exchanged quizzical looks, and I got up to inspect. When I got out to the garage, I found a pleasant surprise. The power antenna was powering itsself up and down, up and down, up and down. I had to then manually shut down the antenna, and take it to the dealer the next day. I think this was what gave it her personality for the years to come.
It was on one of those weekends that she served faithfully, three years later, that I let her go. We had just stopped at Dairy Queen for Ice cream to go on our way home. As soon as I told my kids not to spill a single drop on the polished leather, my daughter slipped and landed her whole milk shake on the seat, and down to the floor. To make a long story short, I promptly headed for the nearest Cadillac dealership, and an hour later we were on our home in a brand new car. I still miss her, for some reason she held the biggest place in my heart out of all my Cadillacs. Sometimes I wish I hadn't gotten rid of her, but I would have been torn apart to see her condition fail in my hands over the many years. Looking back I am proud to have owned one of the finest luxury cars offered in her time. I hope you enjoy reading my little flash of memory from long ago, as much as I enjoyed telling it.
This review brings back many fond memories I had with my older Cadillacs. It's a sad thing that these cars aren't built with as much care and joy as they once were.
My son did the same with my Mercedes and I just sent it out to be detailed. Afterwards there was no more eating or drinking beverages in the car. Selling it over a spill seemed a bit extreme.
What a great story! It just goes to show that no matter what your station in life, a car is always a great part of that. He was not bragging about his wealth, only showing an appreciation that he had the means to enjoy a great car. No matter how much money he has now, he will never be able to buy a real car like that brand new ever again.
Yes, it would be that I am showing my profound appreciation for this car. Because I can, and no, I'm not bragging, I only keep cars for four years at the most. Because of this, it is pointless for me to keep a vehicle beyond this time frame. The "spill" was just the little push needed for me to finally make my decision at the end of the fourth year. As I said, I still greatly miss this car, and desperately hope that Cadillac will produce a car that can match its standards.
Why is it 'pointless' to keep a car longer than this time frame? Certainly it is conceivable that one might prefer one's 4+ year old car more than any new ones available, regardless of cost.
I really like the 1977-79 Cadillac Fleetwood's/Deville's cause they have a very good power to weight ratio (one of the best power/weight ratios of the late 1970s) and they are very classy looking cars, I think that your Cadillac is the last of the powerful Cadillacs and last of the great Cadillacs ever made, I thought it was a big mistake for Cadillac dropping the wonderful 425 motor in favor of the 368 motor (which was one of the worst motors GM has ever made) and later the heavily underpowered 4.1 Liter V8 motors, I think Cadillac should've replaced the 425 motor in favor of the 307 V8 and the optional 350 gas V8 motors instead.
I don't let anyone eat in my cars, even on road trips. That is what restaurants are for.
Good review, god those cars were so classy and so elegant, I long to have a 77-79 Cadillac deVille or Fleetwood in the future, especially a '79 Sedan deVille or Fleetwood Brougham D'Elegance!
No, he's not bragging, just reviewing on a car. Go hate somewhere else.
