2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Limited Edition. I am having a problem with the left tail light going out whenever I press on the brakes too. From what I've read, it's the computer panel inside the tail light assembly that has shorted out and by replacing the entire tail assembly can I drive legally without being pulled over for the 3rd time. Anyone want to buy a Jeep? Lol...

I am currently experiencing the tail light issues that I see many others have observed. I have a 2000 Grand Cherokee and I just tried to install the new bulbs, guess what? They don't work. It looks like this is a reoccurring issue with this vehicle and I agree with the previous comments, we should all flood the manufacturer with complaints. It is hard enough to keep a vehicle properly maintained (financially) much less spend this amount of money for what appears to be a design issue.

My brake light is out too. I have also replaced the growling door lock. Everything wrong on a Jeep costs $200, and if there are 5 things wrong, there is no discount for the combined labor. The brake light problem is just poor quality, but what do your expect for $30,000? After a 3 year lease and a five year buy loan, I will have paid $45,000 for it.

I have the SAME PROBLEMS with the locks and the lights! I am trying to find replacement parts at discount... has anyone found anywhere cheap to get the part and do it myself. We should get a petition to send to Jeep. This is RIDICULOUS!

It sounds like I'm having the same problem with my driver side door lock. The driver side door lock makes a loud grinding sound whenever it's unlocked, looks like I'm on the same boat with many of you. Thank goodness carsurvey. org exists, at least I know now that I'm not alone with this problem.

I just got the CGC 2000 a few days ago new and have the exact same problems as what are listed here. I have yet to get anything fixed. I have the breaklight and devil lock problem. Any suggestions on repairs or on how to take my aggression out on Jeep :)

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with problems with the left Tail Light. The brake light goes out when the head lights are on. I did visit this site to realize that I can't fix it, but will have to replace the whole lens assembly. Go get the tail light assembly from www.carlightswholesale.com. They are cheaper out there (58.12) instead of spending the over 200 bucks on a tail light. Good luck to you all.

I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and as I have seen am not along with my problems. The driver side window stopped working and the door lock on driver side rear door makes the grinding sound. I had the extended warranty, but it ran out 40,000 miles ago. So I guess I must fix myself or pay dealers inflated prices. Any advice in this area please let me know at lbingha@bellsouth.net.

I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Charokee Laredo, I have been dealing with a problem that has both my husband and I wondering if anyone has the same problem, It smokes from the front part of the hood it doesn't over heat, and none of the gages show any problem, and there are no leaks that anyone can find and the radiator is okay too, but it does this at least a couple times a week, after you drive it around four or five miles down the road.

Also when you drive up a small hill it kind of skips and looses power like it isn't going to make it up the hill I don't know if this could be the same related problem or if it could be a differant problem. I would appreciate any comments from others. Tnank you Sandy L.

I also have a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I have fixed the door locks twice and now this morning the front passenger door would not open at all! I know it's very expensive to fix. I cannot believe this is not being acknowledged as a defect for the manufacturer to correct and foot the bill. How loud can we yell "enough"!

I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I too had the same problem on the left tail light/brake light. Thanks to this website, I've regained my sanity (and stopped changing light bulbs). Additionally, I was not going to pay for a part unless I absolutely had to, and I was able to repair the light with info from this website. In return, I thought I'd post how I did it.

1. Remove the tail light assembly. Most of you know how to remove the light assembly if you've changed bulbs, so I won't cover that.

2. disconnect the wiring harness by sliding the red locking clip to the side in order to press the side of the male connector and pull apart.

3. Once you've got the tail assembly away from the vehicle and on a bench, remove the light socket for the tail/brake light. You will see 3 silver contact points inside the black plastic ring. 2 are grouped together and there is one that is opposite of the 2. The one by itself is the ground; the other two are the contacts for the tail light and brake light. The problem lies with the ground connector. (BTW, I tested continuity with all lights and contacts including the turn signal and the reverse light to verify that the circuit board itself was good, and it was).

4. clean all contacts with a Q-Tip and some sort of contact cleaner - rubbing alcohol will work.

5. You should notice that the ground contact is depressed into the plastic and the plastic itself is slightly warped down. I was able to use a small pair of needle nose pliers that have a 45 degree angle to press up on the contact from underneath using the opposite lip of the hole as leverage (very carefully). Once it had moved up a bit, I was able to wedge a mini-flathead screwdriver in between the metal contact and the plastic to force the contact up even further (again, very carefully). Once it looked even with the rest, gently reinsert the connector and test.

Hope this helps...

I came here frustrated with my 2000 Grand Cherokee's tail light, then further frustrated when I realized I was going to have to spend 60-100 bucks for a replacement tail light assembly. Fortunately, I read to the end of this thread, and followed the above comment's directions... within 5 minutes my tail light was functioning properly again! I used a mini flat head screw driver to (carefully) pry the single metal contact up, (then I wedged a tiny folded piece of aluminum foil under it (we'll see if it holds) and screwed in the bulb. IT WORKED! I recommend trying your hand at fixing it yourself if you can!

This is unbelievable. I knew it had to be a more common problem when I saw another 99 Grand Cherokee the other day with the left tail light out. Why is more common in the left? I am paying $175 for parts, plus the inspection charge. Almost $300 for this stupid problem. I haven't had the door/window lock problem yet, knock on wood. But, warped rotors every 6 months is enough to drive a sane man crazy. The only good thing I can say about this car is that it's a comfortable ride.

Thanks a bunch. I've had this problem with my '01 Grand Cherokee for months now, not surprisingly the dealer just wanted to replace the assembly (for $200.00). After reading the comments above it took me about 15 minutes to fix this tail light glitch. I was able to use a push pin to leverage the contact into place, then filled in the gap with a folded paper wedge. I'll probably get back in there and make a more permanant fix. Thanks again.
