I have a Puma and have had the chip mapped by Ford Racing at their secret development centre in Croydon. The 1.7iVCT engine is one half of the DFV V8 Formula 1 engine and once chip tuned to F1 standards (standard settings) produces a little over 300BHP at 14,000 RPM.
There is no need to supercharge it, just have the restrictors removed and the chip mapped back to standard and you have the fastest car of its generation.
What!!! that's very laughable, do you even drive or know anything about cars?
After that last comment I'm not so sure, 14k rpm! yeah right its not a super bike!
There the only road legal things that can rev to that and that's mainly due to weight so there is less stress on the engine, but anyway if your puma zetec can crack 14k rpm good on yer, but I wonder how long it got there for before blowing up? 1, 2 seconds?, sorry, but to have those kind of revs in a road car would require either a superbike engine as mentioned above or have an actual race engine which wouldn't be road legal and even then I don't think le mans racers rev that high! I think people need to wake up and smell there corn flakes so to speak.
One small chip is not going to unlock an additional 170bhp by just 'chipping' it the engine would run extremely badly if it was restricted to this extent from the factory. and considering the racing model of the ford puma had a revised intake, exhaust, engine management not to forget some re-profiled 'hotter' cams to achieve 'just' 153bhp up from 123.
So what you say above is complete garbage!.
Read his comment again, you've completely misinterpreted it.

It's a fu87ing ford puma! wow!
Does anyone know about the Ford Puma Cosworth?
I heard there was plans to make 800 units in 1997,with 260 BHP.2.0l turbo @ A Cost of £18000 to £2400.
This would have been great.
THEN I COULD UNDERSTAND ALL THIS DUMB TALK OF THE FORD PUMA BEING THE BEST CAR IN THE WORLD!
As Mr ADP SAID, THE PUMA CAN AND WILL NEVER BEAT A M3 OR AN SKYLINE NOT EVEN A 2.2 SRI ASTRA.
THE END.
The person that commented on 23rd feb 2007 4:04.
My dads 911 turbo don't even reach 10,000 r p m.
You must have wrote it wrong?
How do you get so much bhp from a chip/re-map?
That means your 300 bhp Puma would beat my evo v111?
Another puma driver that thinks his car is faster than ever one elses!
If we base this on a standard puma driver that thinks his standard puma can out run an m3 and a skyline round a roundabout then this 300bhp puma could take on the new 911 twin turbo 0-60 in 3.9. STOP I should tell my dad when he wants to buy the new 911 or 55 AMG I should tell him to buy a Puma that's has a chip/re-mapped...
You guys don't know your Ford Motorsport engines, the Cosworths were detuned by over 100BHP for road use and that was in the eighties, just like the 1.7 VCT Puma.
Daddies 911 Turbo and Evo8 boy calm down, there is no benefit in turbo cars revving high, so don't compare them or let it harm you and your Dads bragging rights at the local MacDonalds.
14,000 rpm is obviously a headline figure and is definately maximum revs, but the car pulls well from 6,000 rpm and feels great from anything above 10,000rpm.
I do sometimes redline it and lets just say that the new mobile phone ban isn't the only thing stopping me from dialling up on the move.

Evo 8 boy here, last comment about the phone was funny lol.
It made me giggle. Sorry mate, you're right about the turbos not needing so many revs.
Can you try and get this in a car mag, I would love to see it.
Thanks evo 8 out.
Hy comment 27th feb 2007 05:06 I never said I was a cosworth expert! If you read my comment I was just asking if any one else had heard about the Puma cosworth that was meant to have been made!!! So say sorry!!!
THE END.
I think it is the last poster who doesn't know his engines.
Cosworth engines were 'detuned' for road use, but the Puma is not a motorsport engine is an uprated zetec unit from the Fiesta and escort etc. Which makes it a little more powerful than the 1.6 and 1.8 units of it's time.
And also this engine was specific to the puma as no other Ford had it so I suppose you can feel special in the fact of that, but at the end of the day it's just a fiesta in a stiffened up party frock nothing more, so please don't make out it's a rally car when it's not.
This car has only rallied a handful of times and this engine is ditched in favour of a duratec focus turbo 2.0 unit.
Even the 'racing' trim it is only available at 153 bhp.

Most of the Pumas raced were 1600s actually and these put out 200BHP in supersport trim.
Id also love to see this thread in a magazine, I will mention it to the editors of Autocar and EVO when I next see them, they are personal friends of mine and regularly call me up for information and specs of Ford cars.
Comment 28th feb 2007 11:51. Nice one mate I would love to see this car as well, he can put his Puma were his mouth is..
Comment about the Puma Cosworth, i, ve heard this story as well.
That would have been some car.
?
Sorry I stand corrected, you are right the ones they raced where the 1600's I was thinking of the one off that was made with that kind of power and 4wd.
Can't remember where I have seen it just remember it from somewhere.

These comments are getting very funny.
99% of people are so wrong.
The puma cannot beat M3 and such. (Although it probably could beat an Astra 2.2 on a track).
However the puma IS one of the best small coupe's ever made (Note one of, not necessarily THE best). Is definatly more than just a fiesta. Its not the most powerful coupe (shame!) but has superb handling which is what you pay for when buying this car. A bit like a Lotus Elise, you buy it for handling, not power.
All in all, people who assume it's a fiesta are missing out on a cheap, incredibly fun to drive car, that beats cars worth several thousand pound more. But hey, there loss.
Maybe it is a fun to drive car, but then so is the new mini (which is utter crap!)
At the end of the day the puma is a hotted up fiesta and is trying to be something it's not, even the 'racing' version hardly offers anything better hear where a good hot hatch will leave it standing.
The puma is one of them oddball woman's types of cars obviously marketed by ford to appeal to this type of buyer when they were making it.
There are far better cars for the money.
Well you've clearly never driven one - something you should definitely try before it's too late.
Also at the end of the day a Skoda is a Volkswagen. But I know which one I would prefer.
