When shifting from 4th to 5th my 2002 X-Type (automatic) made a thunk sound and a huge hesitation. A "gearbox failure" warning appeared on the display. After about another mile of driving, I lost all drive. Dealer says new tranny, about $5200. The car has been well maintained, 63k miles, about a year out of warranty. I've already talked with customer service, and I will soon find out if they will help out. If they do, I love Jaguar. If they don't, I won't be buying another one. I'll post with the results.

I have a 02 X-Type 2.5 AWD. I have a message on the dash that says "CRUISE NOT AVAILABLE." It comes on periodically and causes the car to stutter when accelerating. Has anyone else had this problem? What is it?

Hi guys, I have a Rover 75 here in Australia which uses the same Jatco 5 speed auto as the Jag. My auto has just started not going into 5th at all. Not even done 90,000km and the trans fluid has been changed half the required time. Took it to the local auto shop and they are suggesting a recon auto at $4,000 AUD.

I did a bit of investigating and found that these Jatco 5 speeds had a fault up until 2004 where the reverse / 5th gear piston develops a crack. Jatco issued a technical notice on this in 2004 and has developed a up spec"d piston for rebuilds.

The moral of the story, don't buy any car which has a Jatco 5 speed prior to 2004 unless it already has had a rebuild. I believe anything after that (with the new parts in it) are quite good.

I have a 2002 x-type 2.5 that was purchased for my birthday last year. At 36,000 miles., the the transmission completely died. It cost over $5100.00 to replace. After reading comments on the web regarding transmission problems with this particular year, make and model, I was shocked. I found some attorneys who took a look at my situation and said that they would not be able to help me because of the "statute of limitations". If anyone out there knows of someone who can help me, please post your advice. Thank you.

I have a 2002 X-Type whose transmission just quit going down the highway... BUT GOOD NEWS FOR ALL... THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED ON THIS TRANSMISSION IN SEPTEMBER OF 2003. If you go to http://www.alldatadiy.com/ (you may have to pay 24.95 to subscribe to this site unless your mechanic will pull it up for you) you can select information on your 2002 X-Type and look for the recall titled "A/T Replacement" (they even tried to hide it by not spelling it out) it is related to transmissions made in four months of 2001. It tells you how to check the VIN number of your car and the serial number of the transmission and even give you the dealer letter that was suppose to be sent out to owners and the service center notifications.

THESE ARE THE VIN AND SERIAL # SPECIFICATION ON CAMPAIGN XT307-S941 A/T REPLACEMENT. THE PROBLEM IS THAT YOUR VIN NUMBER WILL NOT SHOW UP IN THE OPEN CAMPAIGN LIST BECAUSE THEY DID NOT SPECIFY SPECIFIC VIN NUMBER IN THE CAMPAIGN NOTIFICATION... BUT AS YOU CAN SEE BELOW IT IS ANY CAR WITH A VIN NUMBER IN THE RANGE FROM C00519 TO C62327 WHICH IS 61808 VEHICLES!!!CAN ANYONE SAY CLASS ACTION. IF YOU CALL YOUR LOCAL JAGUAR DEALER THEY WILL TELL YOU THAT THERE ARE NO OPEN CAMPAIGNS ON YOUR VEHICLE... DO NOT STOP THERE TAKE THEM THIS DOCUMENT AND STICK IT UNDER THEIR NOSE...!!!

Action:

The repair of vehicles within this service action must be targeted in a specific order.

Note the following when scheduling vehicles to replace their transmissions:

1. Unsold vehicles and vehicles that have less than 3000 miles on them MUST have a NEW transmission installed, not a remanufactured transmission. These vehicles take priority over all others as new transmissions have been supplied to start the service action. (A remanufactured transmission can be identified by an affixed label stating "remanufactured" adhered to the top of the transmission).

Note: Only transmissions with an EKA suffix can be used in this Service Action. Transmissions with an EKA suffix must not be used to repair any vehicle not specifically covered by this service action.

2. Transmissions manufactured in September and October 2001 are more susceptible to this concern and therefore the customer contact strategy should focus on those vehicles within the VIN range C32605 to C62327.

3. Vehicles within the VIN range of C00519 to C32604 should be contacted last.

Note: Some vehicles contained in this service action may already have a replacement transmission. If so, the vehicle might not be eligible to receive a replacement transmission.

To determine whether the transmission requires replacement, check the transmission serial number. Replace the transmission only if the serial number meets the following conditions:

^ 2.5L and 3.0L starting with 11xxxxx.

^ 2.5L and 3.0L starting with 12xxxxx.

^ 2.5/3.0L: 1300001 - 1399999.

^ 2.5L: 1908190 - 1999999 & 1X00001 - 1X08740.

^ 3.0L: 1908384 - 1999999 & 1X00001 - 1X09438.

Note: If the serial number has a letter stamped behind it, do not replace the transmission - the letter indicates that it has been remanufactured to the latest specification.

If the serial number is outside this range, do not replace the transmission. Submit a claim for the inspection only.

In all cases, the replacement transmission serial number must be captured for Jaguar's database. This bulletin contains specific instructions on how to enter this information based on your dealer management system: ADP, Reynolds & Reynolds. All other DMS systems do not support this functionality; use the DDW system to update a serialized component as described in attachment # 4.

Below is an example to assist in interpreting the serial number.

Example: 1X15384.

The first digit indicates the year of manufacture (Examples: 1 - 2001; 2 - 2002; etc.) The second digit/letter indicates the month of manufacture (Examples) shown.

The digits 3 - 7 are the running number of the transmission manufactured in the year/month given.

The example serial number was the 15384th transmission manufactured in October 2001.

The procedure for replacing the transmission inclusive of an oil level fill and check is included in this bulletin.

After completing the installation of the transmission, complete the "JATCO S941 Automatic Transmission Replacement Form" enclosed in the box. This form will accompany the returned unit back to the remanufacturer for review and or action.

In regards to my post on July 8th, Jaguar covered 50% of the cost to replace the transmission as a "good will" gesture. The replacement was a rebuilt unit (despite the dealer telling me it was new) and still cost almost $2900.

Thanks for posting the recall notice, my car is within that VIN range and I have already contacted Jaguar customer service about it.

Jaguar Customer Service claims that TSB XT307-S941 does not exist. However, they cannot give me access to the TSB's that are provided directly from Jaguar. Does anyone here have access to a Jaguar service department?

I bought a 2004 x type with 28K miles. I recently replaced the 2 front tires, and rotated the less worn rear tires to the front. At that time my mechanic said the camber and caster were out of alignment from the factory and could not be adjusted. The result of that was the car could not be aligned to Jag's own specs. He suggested taking it to the dealer. I repaid the dealer to realign the car at which time they confirmed it was out of alignment in such a way that they could not fix it??? Rather they said I would go through tires quickly. Ever since that alignment 2 months ago the car has been driving worse. I called and complained and was told that I probably hit a pothole and the wheels were out of balance. Today the left front tire blew out as I was driving on the freeway. While putting on the spare tire, I noticed the inner portion of the tire on the outer rim was so worn it looked shredded. I am taking it back to my mechanic tomorrow. I can't wait to hear what he says. I have a real problem with a company that makes a product they know is defective from the factory and can't be fixed. I always wanted to own a Jag... Never again :- (

I think that overall you'd find that most of the replaced transmissions had very little that was actually wrong with them. I think you will find more truth about the JATCO transmissions at least as used in the Freelander over at the DAP forums... including detailed methods on how to troubleshoot some of the common problems yourselves. The biggest single problem they seem to have are failure of the shift solenoids. These solenoids are a 50.00 part from most Land Rover Dealers.

The biggest single problem is both Jaguar and Land Rover NOT TRAINING THEIR MECHANICS PROPERLY. Indeed some dealerships are selling both brands... hence the same poor service is being provided on both makes. They only know how to replace the entire unit be it engine or transmission... and geez... backyard mechanic can do that... Some on the DAP forums have done it themselves. Ditto on the Powertrain KV-6 engines. A new engine bought through DAP is about 3500.00 plus shipping.

And I continue to enjoy my Freelander with 93,660 miles on it, and it's still running great and shifting strong. I guarantee you if my shift solenoids or engine ever do fail, I won't be over at Land Rover getting it repaired!!

Mark.

Similar problems starting to happen with our 2002 Jaguar X-type 3.0...headlamp replaced 3 times, still burnt out, moon roof not closing properly, and replaced water pump at only 40k miles. Not looking forward to having to replace the transmission!

I own a 2002 X-Type 3.0 Jaguar. Twice the car died while driving. It occurred once in June then again in August, for no apparent reason it just stopped. I pulled it over and it would not start. The first time I went back the next day and it started right up and I did not have a problem till August. The same thing occurred when the next day it started right up. My mechanic asked if the engine light was on and I said no. He said until it happened again and I got it right to him, he could not do anything. I was wondering if anyone has had the same problem?

I have a 02 x-type sport 2.5 loaded with 52,000 miles. the car is a blast to drive. I bought the car from an older lady in NY in 04. with no problems. A few years later I took it in for 40,000 miles service and the dealer called later and said they need to keep the car for an extra day.

Wow they fixed:

thermostat housing to oil cooler

left head light washer cover, and squirter

hand selector lever (j-gate code)

oil pan gasket

outlet elbow gasket

passenger seat motor

driver seat belt twisted and reattached.

I think the service was top notch many of these problems I did know of. If they would not have replaced them while under warranty I would have had a huge bill.

I only drive this car on the weekends cause I have a company truck. But when I do I'm very rough on it. Pedal to the floor and I've had it up to 130 before racing a crx. Kinda funny cause when we got off the e-way he said not bad for a family sedan. I had to laugh cause I think it would go more with more road. Maybe this car is made to be driven very hard, so far it works for me.

I do have one problem with the car, bent rims and flat spots on tires. it seems like every time I hit a pothole or even a large bump it bends. I like the look of the 17" split 5 spoke rim, but they are junk. I heard that Keystone repairs rims. I was gonna check it out. I'll let you know.

Remember a car is a machine and made to be driven like it was designed for. "So drive it like you stole it." (richie bobbie)

I bought a 2002 X type with 19,000 miles. The engine failed at 62,000. The car has been at the dealer since June 1st. After more than 4 months they told me that my extended warranty won't cover the engine because I missed my 50,000 oil change. A new engine will cost me $10,000. I brought the car in regularly for service to the same dealer that sold me the car and the extended warranty. At 54,000 the dealer told me he did the 50,000 service, but now they claim I didn't ask them to change the oil. The invoice states, miles in 50,000--miles out 54,324 but it doesn't mention the oil change.

2002 Jaguar X-Type.

Don't BUY IT!!! transmission and transfer case replaced at 59K the dealer quoted a little over 10k to replace both. Other issues include: The check engine light keeps coming on due to a evap issue. took it to the dealer and they charged me $115 just to tell me that I need a new gas cap. replaced the gas cap and about a month later. same thing, the check engine light comes on. These cars look nice and drive OK when they are working properly. I took the car to a local transmission repair shop and they rebuilt the transmission and bought an used transfer case. took them almost a month to wait for the parts. bottom line if you like to drive don't buy this car cause all you will be doing is waiting for your car to get out of the shop. and once you think its fixed another issue WILL come up. trust me.
