Concerning the transmission post made on 11th Feb 2008, that is the same response I got from Jaguar which I posted on 24th Aug 2007. They were kind enough to only charge me $2900 (wow, thanks). I would like to hear how the poster on 29th Dec 2007 managed to get the tranny changed for no charge!

2002 2.5 Jaguar X-Type.

In regard to my comment on Feb 18th:

I dropped off the Jag, got a house loaner car at no cost and was told they would diagnose and let me know. As suspected, it was the transmission (although had only slipped 2 times ever) and the prop shaft. Both were replaced at no charge (Select Edition until March 30, 2008) and I picked up the car today. There is now a 1 year warranty on the tranny and prop shaft, regardless of the Select Edition expiring.

I may have been lucky, but to be honest, I am very happy with the service on this.

We have a 2002 X type and have had many of the minor problems posted like replacing the trunk latch etc. We have just had the transmission rebuilt with just over 40,000 miles on it. Silly me didn't buy an extended warranty. Now we have the high pitched whining when it is cold outside. It's a real lemon. Would be interested in hearing if anyone knows of a class action lawsuit. I know I couldn't sell defective parts and get away with it.

I just bought a 2002 jaguar xtype manual transmission.

This car still has the 30 day tag on it and the check engine light came on while I was driving it at the same time the temperature gauge would go up to hot , but the vehicle is not really overheating! as soon as I turn the car off for a simple second and turn it immediatly back on.. the gauge will go back to the middle, but 5 min. later go back to reading hot! I had the coolent sensor fixed, but still have the problem. Has anyone had this problem yet. I'm really not looking forward to having to replace the tranny like it seems everyone has had to do. wish I would have seen this web site before I got into this nightmare.

Thank you.

I understand that someone has started, or is interested in starting, a class action suit. His email address is windowszvinly@yahoo.com. I, too, am interested in the class action suit and will be in touch with him also. If he doesn't file, then I'll do it. As for someone getting his transmission replace at no cost - it must be as a result of having an extended warranty. It seems Jaguar is not willing to stand by it's product and will not pay for any repairs that are not covered under warranty.

OK guys, you buy a $10,000 to $15,000 used X-type and expect it to act and perform like a $100,000 dollar car.

This is a cheap Jaguar. You get what you buy.

If you want a good Jaguar, spend some money and buy a XJ8.

The comments here are really eye-openers for me. We bought a 2002 2.5 X-Type in 2002 and have been very pleased with it. Of course, it's my wife's car and she doesn't put a lot of miles on it. Right now, it only has about 25,000 miles on it. We experienced our first problem with it a couple of weeks ago when it blew a lower radiator hose. And, I don't even think it was a fault of the car as I suspect it was due to something the garage did when I had them flush the radiator the week before. Both my wife and I have been impressed with the stability of the car on the open highway and have enjoyed owning it more than any other car we have ever owned. I guess I should think about replacing it before any of the problems listed here crop up.

Hello All, I just bought a 2002 jaguar X-Type 3.0 Manual has 112kms on it. Everything seems fine on it (ie drives well) but the engine light is on and the steering wheel starts to vibrate on the high (roughly 90 - 100kms/h). Does anyone have a similar problem.. or can anyone suggest a solution or what the problem might be? I was told that it might be just the wheel pressure/alignment that's causing the vibrating.

PLEASE RESPOND! THANX! or email me Aray4n@gmail.com!

Without the error code, the light on the dash doesn't tell you anything. You can get a code reader for about $80 (or less).

One very common problem (if no other major problems can be found) that throws the check engine light on is a fuel system vacuum leak. Remedy... change the gas cap.

Wheel vibration... take them in for balancing. If your car is like mine, the technician will also tell you the the rims are bent. They bend vary easily. New rims are about $180 ea.

Other 3 rims are bent

That's just what I can remember...

I own a 2002 X-Type. It's fun to drive, but the consumer is expected to bear the cost of quality on this product. I will never own another Jag nor Range Rover. My 1992 Volvo is still a better performing car and is more dependable. Not to mention that mechanical specs are available; can't find details on the Jag and I no longer trust dealership to be knowledgeable enough to work on the vehicle. Parked and covered...

Reading these other comments! Freaks me out a little! LOL.

I have a 2004 X-Type.. Runs & drives great until one day I noticed it almost skipping from second into 3rd gear giving it little gas, but if it was floored it would shift every perfect, but still have to apply more gas just to get the car moving.. Its acting like it's not getting enough tranny fluid to where it's got to go, but they said it's topped off at the right level, but the fluid is burnt.. Does that mean I could be looking at a new tranny or what!? It only has 47,000 miles on it..

For those who need to know, this does not have a replacement tranny filter, and of course, the tranny dipstick.. It's a sealed unit.. So as we speak I'm getting 5 quarts of tranny fluid ($25 per quart) plus labor Yea... Nice huh? So yea.. Performance lacking & the slip from 2nd to 3rd gear on low acceleration is my case.. I'm planning on keeping this car for a while...

Any other suggestions as what else it could be, feel free to let me know, thank you, I appreciate it..

I bought an '04 X-Type with 40,000 miles. I bought the extended warranty, but so far the following has been fixed under the factory warranty.

- transmission oil leak (could smell the burn while driving)

- auto levelling headlight sensor (xenon option) located in drivers side wheel well

- rubber front sway bar bushings replaced with metal bushings (recall-made a huge difference on how the car handles bumps in the road)

- engine oilpan gasket replaced (while they were looking for the elusive transmission leak, although I have my doubts that it was ever leaking)

- water pump replaced (not sure why they did this, perhaps in search of the burning smell, which turned out to be trans oil on the exhaust)

- transmission software update (recall-now it shifts smoother)

- defrost vents would not stay clipped down (recall - new vents that look the same but now stay down)

- replaced front drive half-shafts (recall? they said the rubber boot was cracked)

- have trouble getting the gas cap off and am going to ask that it be replaced.

Despite all this, I really like the car. Jag service in my town is pretty good. It helps to be vocal about anything you don't like.

The car is great in the snow, and handles very well around corners and at higher speeds. The potential down side of tighter suspension is how it handles bumps in the road. (In contrast, my accord is great over bumps, but has always given me the eerie feeling that it is floating around corners and at high speeds.)

In general, the car is made for the open road, where it will get better than 27 MPG. Around town it can get < 20 MPG, particularly if I lead foot it, which I usually do.

Sorry to hear everyone that has posted has had such problems. I think most people post when they have a problem and start to Google similar problems, and find blogs like these. Although, a lot of posters, its considerably small compared to the amount of cars they sold.

I actually came across this thread looking for performance parts. I leased my Jaguar X-Type 2.5 in 2003. During the lease I had an issue with the gas gauge, which was replaced under warranty. It would read half tank when I had just filled it. Besides issues with the Continental tires, that was my only mechanical problem.

My wife, main driver was also in a head on collision with an Elk. (Cow on stilts, if you haven't seen one up close) It did quite a bit of damage, but the officers responding to the scene were impressed with how the car held up, and told us of a fatality only a mile from there where another car had hit an elk. These have been the only issues.

It now has 85K miles on it, and was happy enough with it I bought it when the lease was up. I now use it for my work commute, although not near as comfortable as my 05 BMW X5, and 07 Escalade, nor which is not near efficient on gas as the Jaguar. Plan to keep it till the wheels fall off, and at this time I would guess that will be well over 200k miles.

I bought a Jaguar 2004 X-Type, which drove like a dream until one day I was at car wash and it wouldn't start, and showed message gearbox failure. Then after a day it started fine until a couple a months ago when the transmission died, so now it's in the shop because it's about 5100. My dealer won't help me, so what do I do, because right now I'm going mad. So if anybody could help me with some advice, please send me message at markeem371@yahoo.com
