Hi You unhappy people.

My other half has a 2002/02 Lupo 1.4 E and only 10k miles.

Taking a friend to hospital and six miles into the trip, EPC came on - not flashing, lost power and dropped to second gear. Max speed 20 mph.

Got home in limp mode. Booked in for four days later at Specilaist VW / Audi garage. Left it for two days. Needed the car so got RAC Recovery out. The man started it up and the light was off and everything normal. He said this sometimes happens - no explaination!

The only clue we had was that when the EPC was on, the brake lights did not function.

Never had any problems with past VW and Audis!

Why won't VW come up with a mod. It's not good customer relations.

Good luck, but how much will you lose by trading in when the dealer asks 'Any history problems?'

Regards.

27th May 2007.

Hi, I have a 02 vw polo, which I bought last year from my sister. Since then I have had no end of problems. The latest is that my brake lights stay on when the engine is switched off. Last night I was up until 3am trying to take out the battery because I knew it would be flat today, which it was. I got a jump start today, but again when I switched off the engine brake lights were still on. So now battery flat again. Any suggestions?

Hi there my names Sam and now am also feeling exceptionally peeved at myself for buying my 02 plate 1.2 polo for I am having the same problem as many of you. My engine management light came on shortly after I bought the car in 2004 and was told and engine coil was at fault and then replaced under warranty. One year one the light came on intermittently causing loss of power and jerking during drive - sent it in and ran full diagnostic - no problems found. After losing all power whilst motorway driving today I sent it into the dealership where I've been told its my catalyst and theres new software upgrades for my engine which may fix the problem. I was told that if I've been experiencing shuddering in the engine that this may have caused small quantities of fuel to enter my catalytic converter and therefore break it at a cost of £400. can someone tell me if this is accurate please? I'm reluctant to send it in as if I replace the catalyst I'm worried it may happen again if they cannot fix the engine problems. can someone pleeease advise me I'm a broke student and VW are not making my life any easier. cheers. Hi all I'm a Driving Instructor using two VW Polos one TDI manual one Auto today the Auto locked in park and refused to go into gear I had a spare brake light switch in the glove box (I know vw appear to have a problem with these) replaced it and all is well apart from yes you guessed it EPC light is on. Will post again as soon as I find out any more, but brake light switches are a problem bringing on all sorts of lights on the TDI.

Further to yesterdays info the "EPC" or electronic power control light on the dash I'm informed by a vw technician is more or less an alarm to tell you you have a problem with the car, I took it to TAYLOR CLARKE on the Isle of Man they plugged it in to a vw diagnostic and he explained what the problem was and was more than happy to help he cleared the fault light which remained from me replacing the brake light switch and all is well and NO CHARGE!!! thanks to TAYLOR CLARKE.

WOOHOO!!!

I've got a 1.2 52 plate polo. it's been in almost 20 times since October 2006. No end of problems, including having exhaust hangers replaced, a speedo, air con unit, suspension bushes, vaccuum pipe, engine cover rubbers, rear windscreen washer pipe, 2 coil packs, the catalytic converter, yet I'm having more problems!!!yesterday, engine management light came on, and stayed on,, for the 4th time in a month!!!

Last time I took the car in, they said they wouldn't give me the car back until it was working absolutely fine and there wouldn't be any problems with it. HAHAHA!!! I got it back from them Thursday, and by Sunday afternoon... SURPRISE!!!

Advice for anyone out there thinking of getting any new VW... just stay well clear..

I've been through so much upset, anger, depression everything because of this unreliable, useless little car.

Worst thing? To give it back to the dealership, they want over a grand off of me!!!

What a p*ss take!!!

Sick of VW's, will never EVER get a recent one. Ever.

Just a update from my previous message left on the 15feb at 14.26 well were do a start the cars been in and out the garage since feb engine managment light on and off! in march paid £140 on coils again! then car went for mot. light was off when it went in. failed mot paid £350 to get it fixed garage said it was an electrical fault with the light coming on. took it home drove OK for a week stopped at traffic lights then it reapreard! called vw customer service this was breaking point who advised me to call my local vw garage. talked to service manager who advised me to use my free service which I had first with arnold clark so that the service history was up to date so he could put the car forward for a good cause to vw booked it in to the vw garage for a diagnosal. dropped the car off to arnold clark 2days before it was to go to vw. the car was drving fine no light! called to check everything was OK. man advised that I should book it in with them (renault) and they would fix the problem they had found. bad elertics causing the enginemangment light. told him just to leave it cause it was booked in with the vw garage and asked if he could write down an explanation to what they had found. went to pick the car up no explanation given he then said that renault would not be able to fix it and it wuld have to go to vw after him trying to book me in the previous day. (my dad was with me this time) started the car which shuddered to a hault with the light flashing. car was then toaed to vw garage £40. cars been in the garage since last thursday got diagnsoed and good cause sent to vw. they got back to me today with the news that they know that it's a fault with the car 03 1,4s polo and that the full engine need replaced! and they will kindly pay 40% of the cost! great I though until they hit me with the cost! I will have to pay £1352 toward the cost! total joke. I asked if I could trade it in as I've had enough!talked to sales manager who advised that the car is worth£0 unless it is fixed. so I have no choice to for out for it to be fixed once and for all hopefuly! just goes to show they will keep taking money off you for a problem they know cannot be fixed unless this is done!

I have a 2001 VW Golf GTI rolling up to a junction the car just cut out, EPC light is now on intermittently and exhaust emission warning lamp permanently on! Booked in to be seen tomorrow, whilst driving home, the car lurched once as if the brake had been applied whilst I was driving ahead. I have been so happy with the car, after reading all your comments I am very apprehensive about whatever the findings of the diagnostic check tomorrow.

What happened at your check?

My light is on for the past week. I had no loss of power.

Bought a new 1.2 Polo 55 plate; 14,000 miles to date so far.

A hole appeared in rear seats, and the spring came through. The rear seat has never been sat on. Agents replaced it free of charge.

The passenger door has dropped, and scrapes on the sill. Agents say it is not a build fault and it may have been caught in wind. It has never been caught by wind.

Rear hatch glass failed; agents are just replacing. This is my own fault as I bought a new Golf in 2001, had it 4 years, seats squeaked at front, water came in under dash, rear light lenses.

I am a careful person who changes the oil every 5,000 miles and cares for my car. I will go for Toyota next time.

Pretty much the same for me.

I have a 2000 vw polo saloon and have always had the occassional half second jolt almost as if I've pressed the brakes hard for a spit second. However over the last couple of weeks the car has developed new problems. Firstly I had a couple of occassions where I was driving along as say around 50 to 60 mph when the engine lost power so that I had to step down the gears just to keep going. The engine juddered along and I had to give the car a good rev up just to reverse it into my drive when I got home. Now the epc light is on all the time. To get the car to go I have to switch it on for a few seconds, then switch it off and back on again it otherwise the engine basically has no power. Thinking of buying a bike!

We bought a new 52 plate Polo 1.4. We don't drive much - mileage only 13k. Not surprisingly then we have not returned to the dealership except for the recommended services, where I doubt much gets serviced.

With such low mileage I am surprised recently at the increased need to top up the oil; a recent petrol consumption increase, and the (by the above letters seemingly common) intermittent E.P.C. warning light, (mercifully without attendant engine failure). Are these symptoms linked?

And, why do I assume that Volkswagen will not acknowledge at least the EPC as a corporate responsibility, and instead of fixing it for free, will use it as a way to milk me of money?

I bought a 1.4 polo 51 reg at a car auction at the beginning of November. Its been more in the garage than out. The car looked good one day, and the next it would go into limp mode. I paid £600 to have it serviced, and MOT new throttle and thermostat, but now I have been told it is the electrics. The cheap car from the auction is turning out to be the most expensive mistake I have ever made.
