2001 Chev Silverado 2500 HD,6 litre Gas Engine, that has a hard start. I Have to try a couple of times before it will start. Does anyone know what this could be?
I just bought 2002 chevy X/cab 4 door 2500 HD W/6.0 liter.
I got the truck 2 1/2 months ago. It also sounds like a diesel when it is idling or when I mash the gas, and when the motor idles back down, the lifters start chattering again.
I also run a 1/2 quart of lucas oil stabilizer in my oil change just to help out the motor. I also don't like the sound of it, and I'm going to the dealer about. I may have to put new lifters in motor and send Chevy corp. the bill along with some legal backing? No wonder the guy sold the truck I bought. I know now he lied to me. It bothers me reading all of these bad reports about this motor.
I own a 2000 Silverado 6 litre engine and it knocks really bad at startup for about 2 blocks then goes away. I am also a real Chevy fan and sure think the Chevy people would take care of their customers better than this. I did go to Saddler Motors in Sault Michigan and was told that my engine was shot. They were to get back to me with all the problems and what it would cost to fix. But they did not even return my calls after I said I wanted to contact the head office to see why they don`t stand by their products. Michael Bronicheski.
I just purchased an 02 2500 Suburban. Knocks like an SOB only at lower RPM. At idle it kinda reminds me of a "mini me" 6.5 diesel. Right after I bought the truck I changed the oil (5w30) and put some Lucas in her. It got even louder. So I did another oil change, but first I tried the Penzoil engine flush treatment then I topped her off with 10w40 and some CD2 MAXX Detergent. The knock seems to have quieted down a bit, but is still noticeable. I know this "knock" is quite common for the Gm 6.0L. A friend of mine had a 04 with only 90,000kms and it knocked worse than my 02 does.
Has this knocking problem been corrected in new engines (2006-2008)? From what I have read it seems that most of the problems appear to be piston slap from the skirtting, has GM ever officially commented on this? Thanks.
Just bought 2001 chevy 2500hd with 220000 miles. it has a knock, but runs perfect. I was told the 6.0 is a 400000 mile engine if serviced properly. very nice truck, but just has that knock.
I have a 2002-Chevy 2500HD 4x4 with 6L (47,000miles).I do not hear engine noise, but I live in Florida. This truck is a gas HOG 12 mpg downhill with wind at my back. What gears does this pig have? My 1988 truck 5.7L (over all the same) got 14mpg with 1988 technology. What is the deal? Over all nice truck.
i have a 1997 suburban 5.7 with 227000 miles and it just started knocking, it sounds bad. Whats the deal with this.
I had a 5.3 (not that its the same as a 6 ltr.), that was perfectly fine when I bought it. Then I changed oil, and found the oil to be purple (yes, I was wondering what plug I pulled). Well, I didn't have any purple oil, so I installed my favorite Valvoline, then, WOW, I notice a chatter now since the change. So I guess MY recommendation would to try some of that "Royal Purple" oil and see how that works. Hey... let me know how it goes (myonlyemailaddress@yahoo.com). Thanks!
I have a 2001 2500HD 6.0L that I bought with 30K miles on it. I was aware of the "knock" issue when I bought it and I heard a little when I test drove it. I figured I'd live with it. As time has gone by (has 55K on it now) it has gotten worse and really never completely goes away. I pull a 10K gooseneck with it and just let it run... I keep hoping it will blow up so I can put a new one in it. I've tried several oil additives and run 10W30 in it with no luck. Some mornings it won't do it at all until it comes off of fast idle, then it sounds like a lifter. Other times it is there right away and sounds like piston slap. Other than that it is a nice truck... embarrassing to start up with people around though. At 4000rpm pulling hills with the trailer on, you cringe waiting for it to come apart...
Suck some seafoam through a vacuum line to clean the carbon from the top of the pistons; it's not a lifter, it's pinging due to carbon build up on the pistons. I just did it and it worked great, no more knock.
Hi every one I have a 2001 suburban 3/4 ton with the 6.0 and must say I have the knock at cold starts & when mashing the pedal tried calling gm thy are aware of the knock but that was all if someone hears anything on gm doing something for this problem we should post it hear so as we all get the same treatment for are engines as the saying go's all for one and one for all amen that's the way it should be when going to say something to these big corporations/mfg so till then good luck and god bless.
I own a '02 Chevy Silverado K2500 and I have "the knock". I bought the truck from my brother in '06, he bought it brand new in '02 or '03. At the time he was a certified ASE mechanic at a GM dealership. When he discovered this knocking noise at about 12000 miles, he took it to his service manager. GM extended a 3 year or 100,000 mile warranty saying it wouldn't be a problem. Now I own it and it is burning 1.5 to 2 quarts of oil between oil changes because of they piston slap. When the 3.4 motors had this problem, they replaced pistons. I took it to the dealership, with the letter stating the problem and warranty, and the dealership and GM avoided to address the problem of burning oil. They said that there was no oil leaking from the truck. They told me that if I wanted them to tear into the motor that they would charge me for it. What good is a warranty if I have to pay. The knock is not a big deal to me, but adding oil every 1000 miles is. There is a problem and we need to find a way to fix it for all of us Chevy fans who feel like we have been stabbed in the back. There is another website about this problem, www.pistonslap.com. Maybe we will be heard and GM will step up and do something about it.
I just got a 2001 Chevy 1500hd with the 6.0 and when I bought it I had no idea about the knocking. Now the noise is very clear on start up and on heavy acceleration. I am a diehard Chevy fan and have owned them all my life and never had a problem; now I am embarrassed to even own this truck. I run 5w30 Mobil and tried some restore and it helped for about 2 weeks; then took a camping trip and it came back. Don't know what to do, but I am angry.
Unfortunately I own a 04 GMC 2500HD. The knocking noise is there, but it is buried by the leaking exhaust manifolds. As a result of poor engineering, the manifold casting is far too slight and the manifold bolts are that small that they will actually snap off while driving. This is a regular occurrence while attempting to tow a trailer. The truck is rated at 10,000 lbs tow capacity, and my trailer is 6500lbs.
The GM dealer just advised me that the problem will only be cured if I modify the exhaust system. If anyone is considering buying one of these engines, check all facts, I wish I did.
