I dug the Kelly's Heroes reference.
The EP3 CTR especially the facelift model (2004 onwards) is a very good performance hatch for the money. OK, it is not the most comfortable car out there, but it was never advertised as one. You buy a CTR when you want a car with character and an engine note from the race track.
Some people have stated on here, it's not a race car, and it's only a 4 pot engine, and also the fact it has no torque... well there are very good explanations for all these questions and more:
- Honda is primarily an engine company, then a car company. They make awesome engines, with the ability to extract frankly awe inspiring power to displacement ratios, whilst maintaining very good fuel economy and world reknowned mechanical reliability. Tell me what other manufacturer can do this whilst offering their products for a similar price range?
- Honda's have low torque... I agree with that statement. But then what do you expect from a fairly low displacement naturally aspirated engine? The low torque high power output engines work really well in Honda cars for a number of reasons. They have very short gear ratio's and lightweight flywheels for excellent response and allow you to get in the powerband a lot quicker. They produce power only in the higher rpms, this can be very advantageous, when you buy a VTEC you have 2 engines in one! a very economical highly driveable engine at low rpm's, and an amazing highly involving (almost race spec high lift high duration camshaft) raw engine at higher revs. And the sound? Beautiful!
Honda's roots lie in racing, and the balance provided by a high revving naturally aspirated engine combined with an excellent double wishbone chassis, lightweight body and highly engineered transmission provides a very INVOLVING and FUN ride! Seriously I love turbo's and the feeling of hitting full boost and being pinned to your seat in a straight line, but after owning a number of VTEC powered cars I have always gone back to Honda. Turbo's are effortless torquey and dare I say 'dull'... whereas there is something truly special about chucking your CTR into a sharp turn, feathering the light throttle and nailing it again as soon you come out of the apex, only to be greeted once more by a screaming banshee that is VTEC!
I'm hopefully getting a CTR in a year or 2. Although one thing I will miss is my torque.
My Vauxhall C20Xe engine produces slightly less than a K20 - about 195ish. But I have about 160-170lb ft or torque.
How come my NA 2.0 4 pot produces more torque but less power. I mean sure Honda could have just put in that little bit more torque, maybe through better induction, a narrower higher flow manifold. Still I will look forward to 9,000rpm after a kpro ECU and some other bits and bobs.

Hi I own a honda civic type r and I have got a slight problem if some one can help.
It's a 2004 facelift model when I lift my foot of the accelerator in 1st 2nd 3rd gear after hiting 3 to 4000 rpm my car makes a whirling noise fromthe gearbox italso dose it at low revs too between 2 to 3000 revs I have took it to honda dealers and they told me its the diff bearings in the gearbox so they advise me to change all the bearings in the box for the cost of £880 I told them to go ahead with the repair,
when I got the car back the whirling noise is abit louder than it went in I phoned the dealers up when I got home and spoke 2 the technition he told me all civic type r have a noisy box.
After spending £880 im a bit annoyed has any one else got this problem.
