The exterior rear spare tire holder could be one source of noise. Another is the rear tailgate metal latch posts have plastic sleeves that can wear out and also cause noise. Replace the plastic sleeve from an after market auto parts place i.e. Rock Autoparts. A very inexpensive replacement part.

A lot of the rattle, believe it or not, comes from the motor.. Just tighten the mounts down and the the rattle should dissipate. Also, it could be that the pulleys are a little off balance, but that is not often the case.
