Doesn't sound good. I'm not a professional when it comes to transmissions, but it sounds like it may be time for a transmission replacement. However, try getting it checked out by a trusted garage, you may just need a shift solenoid. Don't assume that I'm right though, because like I said, transmissions are not my specialty.

My 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is doing the same thing! I guess I've tried everything else and must admit I need to save for new transmission... sigh.

In an earlier comment several people had the exact same problem. It's not your trans but some kind of sensor. Go check out the comments; it's an easy fix they said though.

Same here. Finally figured it out to be a coupler that brings the transmission fluid from the tranny (output) to behind the radiator, to cool it, and then returns (input) it back to the transmission. At this stage I don't know which is which, but the coupler in question for me is on the lower line.

With NAPA in Campbell River, BC's assistance, we were able to not only see where the link was broken, but to find out the part is discontinued. So check out the lines in front of your radiator, notice the 2 weird couplings, one may be broken (or the line itself). When I solve this problem, which I will, I will let you know the solution.
