I had the same problem... paid a mechanic to fix it, but I could barely drive it home. So I fixed it myself... changed the spark plugs. Behind the O2 for the air filter (have a good look) there is a black little air line that needs to be reconnected. It will stop the surging and you will be able to start and drive your car again.

Check the coil pack is generating spark for each plug. I had the same issue and did the screwdriver test, PS: be sure to wear insulated gloves, they have quite a kick. Remove the coil pack and sit it on its side on the top of the motor. Position a long screwdriver about 3 mm away from the end of the contacts and get someone to crank the motor for you. If you don't see a spark coming from one of the points that make contact with the spark plugs, you will need to get a new coil pack. Cheap on eBay.

Remove and clean the throttle body.

There is a small hole for the exhaust gases that gets blocked and leads to rough start up and idling.

I had the same problems as you, and after cleaning, the car is back to normal running.

Hey, I had the same issue. Just changed the coil pack and it seems 85% better. Also, check there is a small hose near your air filter, as if it's not on properly, it will run terribly.
