I had the same problem and discovered it was a blown fuse. Save your money and don't take it to a tranny shop. You can change the fuse yourself in the fuse box. The overdrive light will come on when depressed. The cause of the fuse being blown was the wire from the gear shifter overdrive button was stripped and grounding on the metal... Hope this helps.

They are 4 speed trans. Mine had the same problem. I racked my brain trying to figure out the problem. Ended up being a pinched overdrive switch wire in the steering column. There is a solenoid on the driver's side kick panel under the dash behind the fuse panel. It's the round silver one. On the same panel are two other solenoids that are square black ones just to help steer you in the right direction. The only other thing it normally could be is a temp sensor next to the thermostat on the engine. Hope this helps!
