OP here. Ironically, from the 4 Toyotas I have had, the least problematic rustwise was also the oldest - a 1992 Celica, which I sold in 2013 without a single hole in it.

Toyota rust is mainly a problem in countries where they salt their roads in icy weather - Germany was/is one of those. Using gravel mixes with the salt that clings to the underside, making the situation worse. Who has the time to completely pressure-hose their vehicle's underside every time they take a drive in snowy weather?
