The replacement of gauges with warning lights is not idiocy. While I think I agree with you that it’s less informative, it’s cheaper to manufacture and thus has become the standard across all makes and models. The cost savings are transmitted not to the MSRP, but the manufacturer’s profit margins. It’s textbook capitalism’s race to the bottom.

Tell your friend when he turns the key to the "on" position, all dash warning lights briefly come on. If there are any that don't, then you know there is a sensor problem or even a bulb could be out.
