Perhaps he was looking at the trip computer, if this car has one, which are always a bit inaccurate in any car.
Mind you, never had this particular car, but high 20's MPG is possible out of V6 or straight 6 cylinder cars, so long as you take it real slow and have a very long trip/road to return a good MPG and perfect weather conditions in summer.
