If you have a paid off house, why not splurge on the best possible vehicle for off-roading (a Jeep)? Why do the repair costs matter either if you have no debt? They’ve gotten reliable in recent decades. Other manufacturers like Ford also stepped up big in the past 15 years or so. US manufacturers realized their quality control was lacking compared to the competition and stepped it up. Remembering that Jeeps in the 80’s weren’t the most reliable is not relevant to the 2021 versions or any recent years.

You are right about Jeep’s used to be a utility vehicle; these days they are for running to the shops. If you want a proper 4x4, buy a Toyota.
