Perhaps I should have been clearer - EGR valve repair and dual mass flywheel (very expensive) are way too much in regards to costs, see the review (though I'm not the original author by the way).

I acknowledge the items you mention were maintenance and I never said that made any car bad.

Also note this is a UK review - in recent years the cost of repairs here has risen considerably (USA for example although expensive generally has better car culture and cheaper car running costs), and point being made is these repairs costs were simply unheard of (in run of the mill cars) a little over 20 years ago.
