1990 Nissan Maxima LX review from North America

What things have gone wrong with the car?

I had a problem with my manual transmission where I couldn't shift from one gear to the next. When it happened, I thought the clutch had went out, but it didn't; instead some pins had to be replaced in the clutch. My mechanic really struggled with solving this problem, though once he finally figured it out the clutch was good as new.

Like many other reviewers have said, I've had injector problems; although, instead of having to replace them totally, I've had to have mines cleaned several times. This is a very quirky problem where depending on the weather, you'll have hard starts and stuttering when initially going into motion.

I've had various other minor problems, like my suspension components needing replaced one by one (struts, ball joints etc).

General comments?

Undoubtedly, my 1990 Nissan Maxima is the best, most dependable car I have ever owned. I would recommended this car to anyone in a split second.

The speed and power the car offers is incredible. My Maxima is now almost 13 years old now and it will still blow away most cars on the road.

Another thing I marvel at is the handling/roominess and overall comfort of the car, it has a very effortless and smooth ride even today! Not to mention so much room for you and occupants.

I must also give kudos to Nissan for the quality of the interior. 13 years later my seats and dash still look great. If you got into the inside of my Maxima you'd say to yourself there is no way the interior could look as good as it does! I give craftsmanship a 10.

Incredibly I bought my 1990 Maxima used with 157,000 back in 1996 I am at 250,000 and counting today. I like the vehicle so much I've kept it as my second car. Other than some minor rust she still looks good and always stands ready to serve me. Just fire her up and she goes and still performs very well!

I must admit I do have a good personal mechanic who worked on my Maxima so she always got TLC and I religiously changed the oil. Believe me I will not mask any problems the Maxima had, but there simply hasn't been anything major. Just brakes/tuneup/starter/alt you know, normal routine stuff. Here's the killer though, the car still has it's original engine and transmission!

Today I own a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but the Maxima is still number 1.
