1999 Ford Taurus SE review from North America

"Ford lost some of it's most loyal customers!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The Rack-and-Pinion busted at about 45,000 miles and needed to be replaced. The cost was about $850.00.

The brake pads and shoes needed to be replaced after 47,000 miles. Covered under warranty.

The front tires were bald and needed replacement at 50,000 miles. Another $150.00.

After about a year of living with an annoying and loud wind rush above the driver's side front door, the repairman found out the door was mis-aligned with the body, the cost to repair: $1,500.00 not covered by warranty. Never got it fixed.

Severe shaking from the steering column at 65,000 miles.

In an effort to remedy the vibration, we attempted to get a wheel alignemt, but that wasn't possible due to a busted right ball-joint at 84,500 miles. Cost:$200.00, warranty expired by now.

Yet again at another alignment, left, front strut is bent at 85,000 miles. $350.00.

Brake shoes need replacement. $100.00 covered by warranty on the previous shoes. 87,000 miles.

Sometime around 88,000 miles when it was unseasonably cold, the heater wouldn't work.

At 90,000 miles, we finally get an alignment that doesn't cure the shaking. $80.00.

Shaking traced to warped brake rotors, two of them! $360.00 at 90,500 miles.

Finally, at 91,632 miles, while ascending a steep incline, the car decided to end it's life, well, to make a long story short, it over-heated and the engine was permanently damaged. Needs replacement, but we refuse to pay

$6000.00 on a new engine, that's more that the old junker is worth! Never got it fixed.

General comments?

It had a comfortable, if not overly bouncy ride.

The rear seat was pretty inhabitable.

The Vulcan V-6 and four-speed automatic; not a good pair.

The shifts were extremely abrupt and hard.
