2002 Volkswagen Polo review from Germany
"Looks nice, drives well, breaks down all the time"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
This was the first time I have bought a Volkswagen and after recently moving from the UK to Germany I decided that it would be the best to buy a car from the most popular manufacturer here.
The first problem, after 10000km, was that the plastic door covering the fuel cap jammed shut. It should open by pushing gently on the left side, but was permanently locked. Although a relatively minor problem, the inconvenience was fairly big as I didn't have enough fuel to get to work, so the car had to go straight back to the dealer.
The next problem came after about 20,000km when the ignition coil became faulty, this was a major problem and required a tow to the dealer and 3 days repair - which is why it was unfortunate that it happened again 3 weeks later.
While they were repairing the ignition coil the second time they also noticed that there was a problem somewhere in the exhaust control, which they repaired.
A few weeks ago, after about 40000km the clutch broke, it just fell to the floor and took a lot of fiddling from my part to get it back in driving condition so I could get home from work. This was the day before the 2 year service, which I moved 1 month forward so they could fix any problems found while still under warranty.
The latest problem occurred yesterday. The brake lights seem to have developed a mind of their own and come on and go off as they want (including staying on after the engine is switched off). I have another appointment at the dealer today and look forward to 'discussing' the future of my custom at Volkswagen.
General comments?
After complaining directly to VW customer services we were sent a 15 Euro voucher towards a VW safe driving course, but I would have had to pay VW 100 euros to get the 15 euros back! We have had no offer of an extended warranty (the current 2 years warranty ends in a week), which I am sure they know will cost them a lot more money in repairs.
On a plus note, the dealers are always sympathetic and fast although the service was a bit on the pricey side. The VW assistance is also very good. I imagine they get a lot of practise.
When it is working it is a great car, comfortable, well equipped and has a classy feel, but this is all let down by such poor reliability.
To sum up, I won't be buying a VW again and after I drop the car off at the dealer later I am off to Toyota to see what they have to offer.
