1992 Renault 19 TXE review from Australia and New Zealand
"Reliable, but maintenance is a must"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Required a new radiator.
Required new shock absorbers (expensive)
Wheel bearing broken at 120,000 k's (also expensive to fix)
Automatic Transmission warning light has come on, after 2 days of rain,& then the warning light stopped coming back on & it is difficult for the repairers to diagnose the source of the problem, but problem mysteriously stopped.
General comments?
The car does cost more for certain parts & repairs, being an uncommon car outside Europe & only certain mechanics, & repairers can do the repairs properly.
The car is virtually rust free, & I have never garaged it, over the last 2 years. The body is strong, & is near perfect, considering the age of the car.
The car can give trouble to start when the car is hot or after it has been running. I had this problem cease by avoiding high octane petrol, as the car is older, & not designed for it.
The car can heat up very quickly in traffic,& the fan will kick in, but travels perfectly when on the high way, out of traffic... the temperature stays nice & low when the car is at a good speed.
The petrol consumption is fantastic.
It's a handsome, unique car, but probably best suited to someone who has knowledge with French cars, & someone who can keep up with the maintanence & care.
I must say, for the 2 yrs I have owned this car, I have got around everywhere, with no problem, so I can't fault the car for reliability.
